so i have a 1989 D150 and was thinking about possibly towing my jeep down to Moab this fall.

i have a class 3 frame mount for pull behind.

i also noticed, the previous owner had a fifth wheel hitch installed.

are there benefits to the fifth wheel capacity wise?

My jeep weighs in at 4815lbs.

what are your thoughts on towing. looking for some insight on this topic as i have never really looked into it. trying to do my research but i know there are people out there that have this nailed down.

Thanks!

i don't think you can legally haul your jeep with your truck just because your truck would not weigh enough and the jeep most likely weighs more than the class 3 hitch is rated for especially when you add in the weight of a trailer. i don't know as much about the 5th wheel hitches but i think if you used one you would be closer to being legal than a tow behind trailer.

I believe the D150 had like 4,000lbs with the 318 and 6,500lbs with the 360.

Your Jeep weighs in @ 4,815lbs according to you + ~2,000lbs(?) for the trailer.

A class 3 hitch has a weight carrying rating of up to 5,000lbs GTW.

So I'd not consider it.

A 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch only distribute the weight directly onto the vehicle frame. They do not increase your GCWR!!!
