Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere. I can't find the info anywhere.
The rear-end in my 2001 4x4 1500 club cab is shot. I'm aware of the yoke differences between the 00-01 and earlier second generation trucks. I can't find a 00-01 rear end locally in the junk yards and I'm afraid to order one from Ebay.
The earlier model rear ends are plentiful.
I know the u-joint type rear end would bolt right on but (if the donor truck is also a club cab 4x4) can I just grab the drive shaft too and slap it right in?
I can't afford a rebuild.

Short answer yes. However, make sure it has the speed sensor or whatever back there otherwise you'll be drilling and tapping your new diff

Thanks.
One more question.
Is the 4x2 axle of the same year any different than the 4x4?

you might want to explore the possibility of an hermaphrodite cross & roller. they used to make u jts with two different trunnion sizes to accomodate such types of swaps. It's not a Chevy, so I don't know if they make one for a dodge app., but it's worth a try.

So, with a little more digging it seems a 2wd rear end of the same year would be a direct fit (with matching ratio of course). I would just be losing the bumps stops? If that's the case there are several 2wd rear ends available. The only off reading I do is a little beach driving here and there. I think I can do without. Thoughts?

Bump stops are on your blocks anyway. At least they are on my 01 1500 and any other truck I've had, wtf do you mean?
