Hi all! My names Matt, and I just joined. I don't have my truck yet but at years end when they have the year end clearance at ram dealers I will be purchasing a 2017 ram night edition. So I have been making a price/mod list of all my first mods so I know how much i will need when the time comes. I want HID headlights and fog lights. I don't want LED because I don't like their sloppy light output. As you know HIDs as fog lights is a bad idea because they switch on and off with the high beams and HID bulbs don't like that. I've searched everywhere for an all lights on mod tutorial for the truck, but I can't find anything. Anyone have a link for me on how to do it. Or does the trucks canbus system cause for some difficulty in doing it. Thanks all

Yeah I am part of the charger forums (my current vehicle) and got some good stuff from those guys. Now that I'm switching to ram I'm doing all the research I can so I know everything I need to know or want to get for it or can do to it. So far I picked out my HIDs and ceramic coating and LED interior lights stubby antenna and so on. Found some good products already. Hopefully will have all of it before I even have the truck so I can put everything right now when I get it. I'm pretty excited. I was going to do a Daytona 392 but my better half decided to sell her jeep so we need a big vehicle. I feel like I've always wanted to have an excuse for a truck and now I have it. So charger RT out RAM sport in.

If you go to one of the vendors on here; RetroShop.us you can find an adapter that will allow you to keep your Fogs on with your high beams.

As for LED Bulbs being sloppy, here is my 2012 Ram with the Opt-7 FluxBeam-X 6000k LED Bulbs in the low beams of my "Quad Style" headlight housings:

As you can see, these LED Bulbs are NOT sloppy. They are actually WAY brighter and cleaner looking then the 6000k HID's I had in my 2006 Ram.

These LED Bulbs are no joke. They light up everything down the road. I can finally see stuff off to the sides of the road in the bushes and fields, I can see road signs 1/4 mile down the road and the best part is not 1 person has flashed me or complained about them yet.

The "cut off" for the bulbs is actually really nice for them being in a halogen lense and not a projector. In the 2 photos I posted of the lights against a wall the closer photo I was about 5 feet from the wall and the 2nd photo I was about 12-15 feet from the wall. In both photos the led bulbs have a nice clean cut off to them and like I said I don't even have projectors.

I know you said your more into HID's than LED's but I just wanted to show you that LED Bulbs arnt "sloppy" or crappy anymore. They are just as good, if not better than hid bulbs. No warm up times, no color changing, no ballasts, no error codes and the bulbs never have issues where sometimes they don't turn on.

Oh wow that is really good!!! Wow. I want 6000k or 8000k colored low beams and 3000k fogs. After seeing how well yellow fogs work to cut through the fog I'm sold on them. Are there colored LED bulbs?

And just out of curiosity. If I chose to say run HID lows and LED fogs will the computer system throw an error from 2 different power outputs?

I don't know about the hid's but I know with the led's they come with Drivers and capacitors for our Rams and you just plug them in and that's it. Nothing else to it. There are tons of members on these forums that run led bulbs in their fog lights and hid's in their headlights and I've never heard of them having any issues.

And yes they sell yellow led bulbs. You can choose your color Tempature just like you would with an hid.

Your low beams look like my fogs lol. HIDs are the better bang for your buck IMO. Used both LEDs and HIDs 753e15246d5e6aa0fcd66c9933676c54.jpg

To reply to how to have all lights on all the time the easiest way in my mind is to wire a relay to the low beam as it is on all the time (except when driving lights are on) and power your hid fogs off it. a digital ballast will draw between 35w and 55w so a massive relay is not needed. that is how i would and have done it then get a resistor to plug into the old can bus harness to not get a message

When I had LEDs in my fogs and HIDs in the projectors there was no issue with bulb out messages or current draw. When I switched the fogs to HIDs all I added was a CANBUS adapter. Again no bulb errors when run alone or with the low beams at the same time.

Don't you need canbus for leds too?

For the fogs generally no. They will have the resistors built right in. An example of this would be the Diode Dynamic XLM2s. For the high and low beams it depends on the brand used whether the capacitors will be built in or if you will need to run an additional resistor or CANBUS adapter. The 09-14 trucks are generally a lot easier to mess with on the lights because the CANBUS system wasn't as sensitive as the 15+ Rams. For any HID a CANBUS adapter or relay harness is required. Hope this helps [emoji106]

Yeah that's some helpful information. So say I just want to get HID what all do I need. For my charger all I have is 35w canbus ballasts. I want 55w for the truck. If I have canbus ballasts do I still need the warning canceler? I'm going to get the relay harness because I don't want to run too much power through my light harnesses and screw something up but here's what I have selected for heads and fogs (note it'll be a 2017)

Also what is the best brands to look into. I got my kit for my charger off of these guys and I've had them for over 2years and no bulbs have gone out yet.

You will need to run the relay harness on the 17 model. It's way more sensitive then my 14. I ran Morimotos on my 12 and now on my 14 and have had zero issues with them. Quality is top notch. Other people are running DDM kits and seem to like them. They are a lot cheaper. I just stuck to what I knew worked on my 12 for my 14. Have you looked into getting your stuff from Retroshop? Here's a link. Better product and excellent customer service. http://shop.retroshop.us/

Call Jeremy on Monday and he'll get you taken care of.

Also on your fogs you would want to add projectors to get the most out of the HID. They don't work very well in a stock fog housing The pic I posted is 35w 5k bulbs in the Morimoto matchbox projector

I looked into the morimoto system and I like what I'm seeing but now I'm confused by the purchase options. There are so many bulb sizes for the 2015+. I'm pretty sure I will need both 9005 for lows and fogs. I'm not sure though. But the truck I'm getting does have the factory projectors.

Also I don't see any options for canbus or capacitors just the mopar harness. This site has confused me haha. Sorry to keep bothering you I'm just trying to figure this all out so I know exactly what I need to buy. 02ba000fbf16e339623e2c325117817c.jpg

LED Bulbs usually come with the following:

▪Bulbs:
bce0ce7cf446271cd9b70ed8b0879722.jpg

▪Drivers:
7014caa35defe0bd75fa9ac8a0a4adfb.jpg

▪Capacitors:
43a5c46942411818a97d3403f6fca171.jpg

Look at it like this. If you compare an LED Kit to an HID Kit, the LED Drivers are pretty much the "ballasts" if you want to call them that. The Capacitors are pretty much the "error free Canbus adapters".

Everything is smaller and easier with the LED Kit. The HID Kit is more complex and "harder" to install if your a novice.

It really just comes down to preference. I had the Opt-7 Boltzen Bi-Xenon 35w 6000K CanBUS HID Kit Relay Capacitor Bundle on my 2006 Ram 1500. The kit was a nightmare to install, wires had to be cut and switched on the relay plug that connected to the trucks H13 plug. It was horrible. Then half the time the lights wouldn't turn on, I'd have to flip the headlight switch off and back on again. They took a long time to warm up and the lighting actually sucked big time.

Now I have the Opt-7 FluxBeam-X 6000K H11 LED Kit in my 2012 Ram 1500 and the output is amazing. They are 10x brighter than the 6K HID bulbs I had in my 06. There is no delay in brightness when you first turn them on, I dont have any "dead spots" or "black areas" in the light beam pattern that some people get with hid's and led's.

In the end, in my personal opinion, the LED kit was 1,000x easier to install. It only took about 25 minutes from loosening the first bolt to tightening the last bolt. All I had to do was remove the old bulb, connect wires labeled #1 to #1, 2 to 2 and 3 to 3. Then I tucked it all into the housing and closed it up. But with the HID kit it took over 3 hours to figure it all out, run the wires, install it all. I had to drill holes to mount the ballasts, cut and extend wires, cut and switch wires etc. Alot of trial and error. The LED Kit wins, hands down, when it comes to ease and time of installation.

As for light output, again, in my personal opinion, the LED kit was 10x brighter then the HID kit. The light from the LED bulbs isn't scattered all over. It's more centered and crisp. You can see a clean & clear cut off line with the LED bulbs in a halogen housing that you wouldn't see with HID's unless you have projectors.

Either way, both are a better option over stock Halogen bulbs. Like I said multiple times, it all comes down to personal preference. Do you want to spend the time hooking up the HID kit or do you want an easy install with the LED kit? Either way you end up with 6000k bulbs that are better then the horrible stock halogens.

No bother man. That's what the forum is for. It will be easier for you to select all your options here: https://shop.retroshop.us/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=4G.15.HIDs

Then you can either purchase from Jeremy or go back to the morimoto site.
