I dont have any pictures, but I bumper pull 10k to 14k lbs regularly with my 1995 3500, pulls just fine, with any weight over about 7k-8k lbs be sure to have trailer brakes, stopping with just truck brakes with much more than that will get pretty dangerous if you have to stop quickly.

A pic of my 1997 1500 and my travel trailer ready to go on my son'e elk hunt in NV. I had 4.10 gears installed and it tows great with the 5.9, though it is getting tired at 247,000+ miles.http://www.ramforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=62669&stc=1&d=1450322952

Is that so? You've come to right place. Read the sticky about the plenum gasket if you've never heard of it or don't know much about it. Any questions, simply do a search and if you don't find it, just ask. Many knowledgeable people here who can help you out.

Not a fifth wheel, but I figured gooseneck was good enough.

I've done a few upgrades, but she definitely didn't like it. Trailer is 40foot dually triaxle, each axle is rated at 15,000 lbs with brakes on all axles. There are 30 5'x5.5' rolls of hay. Definitely don't recommend doing this. Dana 80 axle is actually rated for 11,000 lbs. Truck has severe duty brakes all the way around. More pulling & towing upgrades are coming such as air springs & ats transmission.

holy crap that's a lot of weight, what do you think the total weight was of the load?

How did the truck take it, how did it hold speed? What speed were you doing?

I've towed a max of 22k lbs in my 2014 2500 Cummins. 30' Big tex dual axle dually trailer. You can feel the weight tugging you pretty good going 65mph

I tow an enclosed 40' trailer that weighs in at 15,500#. My 02 2500 CTD doesn't mind at all, averages 15mpg, and gets regular love via AMSOIL. ;)

I had to google 5th wheel. I'm so used to calling it a Goose Neck that when I saw 5th wheel I had no idea what OP was talking about.

2000 Dodge Ram V10 2500 4x4 4.10 rear end here. Regularly tow during the summer a 2500lb(dry) Northern Lite 10'2" camper with a 3 horse trailer. (around 8k fully loaded). Total weight around 10500 or so. Truck has airbags on rear and a super hitch with 21" extension. V10 is a gas glutton, but it sure hauls like a champ.....engine doesn't even break a sweat with this load.

New to the forum... Im looking at a 2001 ram 2500 - 5 speed manual with 118k original.... how is this setup for doing a little 8-10k towing?

noticed tons of cummings diesel trucks for sale...which is better?

thanks

First, I live in the "flat-lands" of South-Eastern Mi - terrain makes a BIG difference in towing capability.

My 96 1500 4x2 extended cab was ordered with towing an open car trailer in mind - 5.9, auto, 3.92 sure-grip, towing package, etc., and for the most part is very capable at it. Biggest gripe is the common 1500's braking complaints - marginal at best without the trailer, better plan ahead with it. Trailer loaded is 6000-6200 lbs. Most open 2 axle 7K trailers only have brakes on the front axle - once I added brakes to the rear axle towing braking became a non-issue.

I had to rescue a friends 28' enclosed trailer, complete with car, pit quad, generator, tools, roof A/C, awning, etc. and even with load and stabilizer bars - while I'd like to brag that it towed it just fine - it didn't. I'm pretty comfortable towing trailers - I drove large/small wreckers - but I can't say that I would want to tow that setup very often. Not a fan of over-loading a tow vehicles comfort zone.

i move them for a living and make a good living off my old 12v, soon should have photos with the flatbed i just installed on the truck. mine has a built ATS auto trans, with a new complete D80 rear end (4:10). some banks stuff under the hood and minor other things. bottom line i have to watch my egs more than anything else when pulling a grade but that's about it

I run a 2001 2500 CTD with a 6 speed manual, just a 25 hp chip- rarely needed, and a recent PacBrake.
I have towed vehicles on a trailer, up and down the AlCan Hwy 5-6 times. Running around 6-10k# gross on a bumper pull PJ will post pics soon.
I prefer a manual trans in the men’s for sure but have never used on with an automatic transmission. Hard to beat a manual- simple is good. Trailer brakes are a must IMHO.....
These are in no type of chronological order- and the rigs are not empty- making the drive- haul some freight!C628D74C-234A-4554-82E4-A217FF82DD30.jpeg

I have a 99 Ram 1500, 318, 46RE (with huge aftermarket trans cooler), 3.55 rear end, and it STURGGLES pulling my 4.000 pound camper with my 245/75 R 16 tires. Thinking of swapping rear gears to 4.56 this spring. My Mom and daughter really like camping. Jody

My 1998.5 2500 Cummins tows 8000 lbs in the mountains just fine. I've had two issues, however. The stock lift pump is inadequate for higher fuel flows. More importantly, the stock automatic transmission will not last at the higher towing weights. If you have a standard, you're lucky. An automatic can be rebuilt for towing, but expect to pay about $8000 for a heavy duty rebuild.
