Ok Gang...

I'm sure a lot of your have heard about this concept and would like to get more information about it. I'm not the one that started it but a guy that's nickname is Dorkweed over on my forum started it back in 06. I'm the one that picked up the torch and continued on.

Why do we need to use it?
Because the VP44 was designed for fuel scoring <450 HFRR and today fuels range around ~520 HFRR which means there is less lubricant in the fuel. Now if the delivery truck for gets to add the lube package to the truck before delivery then the fuel can be up wards of 650 HFRR which can be quite damaging.

Bosch's fuel testing...

How much 2 cycle oil to use?
128:1 Ratio is fine for 12V and 24V Cummins trucks. On CR engines up to 07 you want to use 200:1 ratio. Beyond 07 don't use 2 cycle oil...

How about other fuel additives how did they score?
This was a independent lab that do the testing of fuel additives.
HFRR Values Of Diesel Additives

Will 2 cycle oil effect performance of the engine or MPG?
Yes... It will typically give a slight gain of 1-2 MPG and may even give about 10-20 HP gain if mixed properly. Reason why is because 2 cycle oil is a cetane reducer. So as the cetane is reduced the BTU's rise which means more work can be done in a single stoke.

ASTM testing labs grading scale for diesel fuels... Take notice as cetane rises the BTU's fall... Hence why winter fuels with high cetane give poor fuel mileage.
cetane-btu.jpg

Will 2 cycle oil plug my injectors or fuel filters?
Simply No... I've been running 2 cycle oil for over 100K miles and absolutely no problems with filters or injectors.

Injector after 80K miles of 2 cycle oil.

How many of those little bottles of 2 stroke oil do you pour in for a fill?

Well depends on what a fill is?

If it your first dose then you would use 1 quart of 2 cycle oil for a full tank of fuel. But every time you stop for fuel from there on you only add 1 oz of oil for every 1 gallon of fuel. So if you stop and put $40 buck in and get 10.195 gallons then you would add 10 ozs of oil. Pretty simple right?

I normally carry 1 gallon jug of WalMart SuperTech Outboard 2 cycle oil in the bed of the truck with a old 1 quart oil bottle with the see-thru sides so I can measure the oil out...

Thank you...

Diesels are a whole different animal being the fuel must ignite solely on compression. Not like gasoline engines where you ignite with a spark plug and fuel must not pre-ignite (ping).

I do the same, Supertech is the cheapest and highest on the list for me to obtain easily.

Ok I'll use you for example...

Seriously these are some of the common chemicals if fuel additives... I didn't see any lubricants in that list did you???

Ok... Use if for what?

Keeping injectors clean? If so then you might be mildly surprised about the filter in the connector tube called a edge filter.. But that what a fuel filter is for keep debris out of the injectors.

edge%20filter.jpg

Quoted From Dodge's Factory Service Manual (2nd Gen VP44 and 3rd Gen CR)
Each fuel injector connector tube contains an edge filter (Fig. 13) that breaks up small contaminants that enter the injector. The edge filter uses the injectors pulsating high-pressure to break up most particles so they are small enough to pass through the injector.
So if its carbon build up you using the additive for you also be surprised you can soak it in any injector cleaner you wish and it will not remove anything. What cleans a injector nozzle its reaching 1,000*F EGT's and holding for several miles. Carbon burns at 1,000*F.

So if its catane booster you already know that higher the cetane lower the BTU content. Might be a consideration for winter time start ups but that about all.

If it lubricity... Well like you are finding out there isn't any major lubricant found in the MSDS sheets... As for AMSOil Diesel Con. it scored a 488 HFRR in the HFRR testing passing grade but low. And Bosch considers 450 HFRR border line...

Something to think about...

Dam you lol. I have 7 bottles. And the data shows the 2 stroke is better.

I have been runnin it since installed my new vp about 15k ago. it even quiets the engine a little. every time i tow my rv i make sure i get the egt up above 1000 and hold it for a while to keep the injectors clean.

I just bought a 2007.5 dodge cummins and it has 100horse injectors. Should I or shouldn't I run 2 stroke oil in it?

Over 20 years and almost 200k of driving my 2000 5'9 5 spd. gives me a lot of time learning the sound and feel of my Cummins. I put a bottle of 2 cycle oil in my tank and I was really surprised that I could hear and feel the difference in my Cummins. The motor was quieter and smoother and it seemed to accelerate faster. I drove 155 miles from my home near Show Low to Tonto Basin to pick up my 8000# TT and bring it home. Started at 6700' and climbed to 7900' and then dropped to 2500', the elevation at Tonto. Filled the tank in Tonto and it took 5.4 gallons for a calculated 28.7 mpg. This must be an error in the fill as I normally would get near 20 mpg on this drive.. The truck was not level and was nose high at the station so I will scratch this as an error. I did not add more 2cycle. I have not filled up yet after towing the TT up the mountain. I did the same tow last year and got 10mpg for just the uphill return. As soon as I fill the tank I will report the mpg for the same trip. I did notice a difference in the motor on the return. Quieter and smoother for sure. I almost always run PS Diesel Kleen in my fuel per instructions and it was in this tank. I did notice a little bit of smoke out of the exhaust when going through the gears but not bad.

OK, I filled my truck yesterday and here are the results. On just the return I got 10.8 pulling the trailer up from Tonto. That is a .8 increase in mpg from last year or 8%. Now the 28.7 I got on the way down to Tonto must be either correct or I must have gotten much better than 10.8 on the tow up. Either way the 2 cycle oil seems to increase mpg significantly. The highest mpg in 190+K is 23 on 3 or 4 trips so the 28.7 is crazy high. The 5.4 and 14.9 gal. of fuel added diluted the 2 cycle oil by about 2/3 and I noticed the engine was not as smooth or quiet while returning home. I am going to add the 2 cycle oil to my fuel from now on (1 oz. per gal,). Since I have logged all fuel data in for every fill since new and will continue to do so, I will have a more complete understanding of the 2 cycle oils effect on mpg as the miles pile up. I will report the data as it accumulates. Most all of it will be towing in varying conditions so the interpretations will be some what subjective. With no tow the data will be much more objective.
