Hey Mike what unit is it that you use that shows your GPH and mph and mpg and everything, as we all know the factory read out is far from accurate and all Ive been doing is hand calculating all along.

That is a ScanGauge II (www.scangauge.com)...

ScanGauge II you have to calibrate to the GPH and Speed sensors of the truck to get proper readings. Because believe it or not ScanGauge II uses only those 2 values.

Speed (MPH) / Flow (GPH) = MPG

55 MPH / 2.30 GPH = 23.9 MPG

So how did I get it calibrated?

Simple... Use a GPS and set the offset of speed on the SGII. Mine is 1% off.

Then as for the GPH offset. You have to fill up at a fuel station let the pump click off by itself don't top off the tank. Then drive thru 3/4 of tank and return back to the very same pump in the same direction. Fill up again the same way. Now the SGII will report the gallons use its see now you adjust the offset to match the gallons on the pump. Once done leave it alone. Don't have to do this over and over again.

Like on my truck speed is 1% off and GPH is 24% off.

Like on Mom's 96 speed is 0% off and GPH is 233% off.

I've used it during the period my fuel sender died as a fuel gauge so I would run out of fuel. The funny part was it was really close to being dead on everytime. Reason why its not... Because I found out from weights and measures there is a small amount of error allowed in the pumps so getting fuel at one spot might give you a bit more where another might not.

My numbers are closer to correct on the SGII because my odometer on the dash is off by 0.5 MPH so in a tank of fuel the odometer is off by about 15-20 Miles...

Oh I got that whipped too...

Ok... Let convert to Mile Per Gallon Per Ton. (MPGPT)

I weight out at 7,300# empty and get roughly 21-22 MPG right now. So I'm 3.65 tons and multiply 3.65 by 22 MPG and you get 80.3 MPGPT. But now loaded up with travel trailer and everything I'm crossing the scales at 15,020# GCW. That's 7.51 tons and I get about 11-13 MPG. So multiply again 97.6 MPGPT.

I don't think your Minivan will catch me on the MPGPT.

Basically what this shows is how much work your getting for your MPG... Like saying a 80,000# semi gets 5-6 MPG sound bad don't it but if you convert to MPGPT it will blow mine away...

40 x 6 = 240 MPGPT...

Like saying my ATV gets 30 MPG sounds awesome right... But my ATV has a max weight of about 1,500 pounds loaded.

.75 x 30 = 22 MPGPT...

Make you think...

I didnt buy this truck for MPG'S ... BUT it is a plus for me that I get 21

and if anyone wants better MPG's look here

http://www.ramforum.com/f21/quadzilla-max-millage-module-98-5-02-ctd-8447/#post165140

Well the module is nice but... It won't do you any good if you don't understand how to drive efficiently. Like me I can bury my truck down below 16-17 MPG just driving with a heavy foot. Driving style is the #1 cause of poor MPG's. So if you got poor driving habits no matter what you add it still going to be poor...

Sorry to say it won't happen with a gasoline engine...

There is a simple fact that diesel fuel has more BTU's than gasoline so gallon for gallon diesel can produce more work.

cetane-btu.jpg

Normal diesel fuel is right around 133,000 BTU / Gallon

Standard unleaded gasoline 116,090 BTU / Gallon

Ethanol 76,330 BTU / Gallon

In your first MPG graph there's been quite an uptick toward the end. Did you do any mods that would correlate to this uptick? Or just more hwy/less right foot driving?

Also here's a calculation to throw in. What's your cost per BTU compared? Or cost per mile. :) With diesel being higher than gas this is more important than the MPG. But those are some impressive numbers.

My 4.7 was at 17 MPG (calculated) on the last tank. 15.9 for the 3 tanks of gas I've owned it.
