Finally got around to doing the in cabin filter modification on my 2012 Ram 1500 Sport Crewcab. Easy mod to do, you'll need an exacto knife or utility knife, the Mopar filter cover part number 68052292AA which is about $12 and an air filter either Mopar 05058693AA $22 or Purolator C25869 $9 at Advance Auto Parts.

***Tip***
Advance has the Purolator cabin filter for $8.99 and Purolator oil filter on sale for $5 even right now part number PL24651. purolator has a $5 mail in rebate on the cabin filters and $6 rebate on the oil filters limit two of each. Great deal but rebate ends 9-31-12

Remove lower glove box by pressing in tabs on sides, you dont have to but to make things easier I removed the upper glove box also by removing the single 7mm screw from underneath dash then sliding usb down to remove from housing. This lets you see better and makes cutting easier.

Use knife to slowly and carefully make scribes along inside of raised plastic lip until your through the plastic, cut straight along the bottom to make rectangular opening. Slide in new cabin filter with air flow arrow pointing down towards blower motor. Install new Mopar access cover and reassemble. Enjoy clean air!!!

Does the cabin air filter stop outside trash, like pine needles, from reaching the HVAC coil area? I've never found cabin air filters useful from a comfort standpoint but I might do this if it protects the coil the way your household air filter protects your inside heat pump coil.

I park my truck in my driveway and there are a lot of trees. Pine needles especially have a way of getting through the coarse grate at the cowl intake.

Not sure about the pine needles but If they are getting down that far then I would assume the filter would catch them before they get into the blower motor. Correct RAM does not come with an in cabin air filter from the factory, odd thought because it has the raised lip and cover attachment points for the access cover. easy/cheap mod and should make it so your breathing in cleaner fresher air along with keeping the dash and interior cleaner etc.

Yeah I find quite a bit of dust on the dash only days after I clean my interior...

I am sure they left it off to save a few dollars most people shopping for trucks will miss it and it cuts down on base price. Little things like this all add up in the end.

I just ordered the parts. I love quick mods like this. Thanks for the heads up on this one!

NO, there is not cabin filter mod for the Gen3 trucks. However, Geno's Garage does offer a filter that attaches to the cowl vents on the cowl. But it does look kind of weird.

I removed my glove box on my 2013 and it looks identical to your pics. I assume there isn't any reason to believe that there would be any changes in design that would stop me from performing this mod? Thanks.

If the panel behind the glove box has the shape traced into it like our 11s/12s, I would go for it. Just don't tell the parts guy what its going in so you don't have to hear him tell you B.S. about "it won't fit".
Best easy cheap mod we can do.

All 4th gens not just 11's and 12's have this to my knowledge I know my 09 does. The filter is the same in Journey so you could ask for that one and door and get the parts there are also countless other models too.

I am sure the filter comes stock in the Journey too... All these housings probably come from the same plastic injection molding machines. It seems silly that they wouldn't just put them in. I mean, who would notice a price bump in the truck of <$10 (since they don't pay full price for the stuff).

Am I missing a part? Please see this picture. I was looking to see how hard the cabin filter mod would be and I can see a huge opening above where the filter door cutout would beImageUploadedByTapatalk1363459826.954400.jpg

Here is a closest pic. It looks like a duct that opens and closes, but I assumed that it would open and close with the recirculate button????ImageUploadedByTapatalk1363460756.971829.jpg

Went ahead and did this on my 2013, it was identical to the 2012 molding. I'm sure most people assumed the molding hadn't changed, but I figured I'd go ahead and post in case anyone was wondering.

Maybe that is the "re-circulation" inlet?
