Here's my problem. I have a 1998 Dodge ram 1500 4x4. My transfer case went bad on me. I was told by a friend of mine not to go back with the np241 because it is chain driven and there weak. He said I should go with the 205 transfer case out of a older truck because these transfer cases are gear driven and vitually unbreakable. He said it would bolt right up. When I took my truck to have it install the mechanic told me I had to go back with the 241 because it will not work right with the 205. I need to know is that true? Or has anyone swap a np241 with a 205

The 205 transfer case front drive shaft is designed to be on the passenger side while a np241 front drive shaft is on the drivers side also u would need lock outs on your axle if u wanted to run a 205 it would take seriousness modifications for it to work

if you really want a easy upgrade all 2nd gen 3500 came with a np241hd it has bigger synchronizers and bigger chain be a very big upgrade compared to a regular np241

^Agreed +1.

NP205 wont work without serious fab work, its designed to be on the opposite side our x-cases are. 241 is not a bad x-case, 241DHD would be your best bet.

The 205 won't even bolt up to the newer Dodge transmissions anyway that I know of.

and was there a typo somewhere? you said 1500 and they came with a np231 tcase and the 2500 up had the 241, not nitpickin or nothing but if it is in fact a 1500 a 241 would be a pre decent upgrade and worth the cash

^Nope, that's what he said.

The 241D is a pretty good t-case. I don't think the 241HD will bolt up to a half ton trans. though, just the D.

Ok so a np205 from a Ford can be used with the use of an adapter they are out there, not that hard but not cheap.

231, 241dld, 241dhd, 271D can all be bolted up, just make sure you get the right one. Stick for stick, auto for auto. there are a few different versions out there just get the right one.

Stick spline count is 29 input, auto is 23 spline, and yes you can just change the input shaft on the xcase.

^^^ LOL you should see what I am working on these days, nv4500 V10/dsl to go behind the V8 gas WITHOUT changing any shafts! Almost have a full parts list to make this happen.

That sounds like fun. :naughty:
Would make it easier for people to swap manuals into their trucks too as it's easier to find an NV4500HD for a diesel than a V8.
