Your paving stones weight 3000lbs... even without taking into consideration your passengers/fuel, your now exceeding your limit by 1600lbs...

I'll have another look when I'm not bouncing down the road on the bus, but I think I read your post right...

Fuel is already included in curb weight

My bad.. curb weight does include fuel... weird, I thought it was dry...

Oh well so take ~ 170lbs off my calculations.... Not enough to bring anyone in/out of compliance I don't think.. :)

Yup, and industry standard by everything I've read uses a 150lb driver alone for calculating things like towing capacity. Anything over that needs to be subtracted from those numbers.

The 600 lb number is ridiculous to use on a half ton full size truck. I mean wow, that's only the weight of like 4 people.

Lol could be enough weight to cover an extra friend if they're under weight

Weight Information - Sagebrush's Truck
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Front (lbs): 4750
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Rear (lbs): 6000
Curb Weight - Front (lbs): 3053
Curb Weight - Rear (lbs): 2411
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating Cap (lbs): 8650
Gross Combined Wt Rating (lbs): 17000

Sooooo...
Total weight = Front + Rear weight = 5464lbs
Maximum Cargo/Pass = GVWR - Total Curb Weight = 3186lbs
- 100L of fuel = 167lbs = 3019lbs
- 4 adults (180lb) = 720lbs = 2299lbs available to carry..
- Paving stones 500 x 6lbs = 3000lbs
Net over weight = 701lbs

Good thing you didn't carry the other stones.. granted, if you didn't have 3 other adults with you, you'd likely be pretty close to your max.

Yeah, we were thinking the same way... I was looking at the numbers for my truck. Like I mentioned, I like to play it safe - that's why I broke the load into two trips.

This is an interesting discussion - Didn't realize anyone would bother to do the math, but the actual weight of each stone was actually 5.824 lbs/each, and I only had one other passenger - my wife at around 120 lbs. I'm not sure what the peripheral items in the truck weigh.

On the other hand, my truck's registered weight class is for 9,000-10,000 lbs. which is "right on" according to the numbers I read in the Ram Heavy Duty book putting the GVW for the crew with Cummins at 9,600 lbs.

Those are just the numbers.

Yep, I agree - the harm to the public or to the truck is not worth throwing outrageous weight into any vehicle.

Yes, please do, my numbers show a cargo capacity of 3,258. I believe I got those from the Ram website (subtracted curb weight from GVWR)

Page 2 of the Ram 2012 Heavy Duty brochure contains a matrix showing the 2500 crew manual trans, diesel to have a GVWR of 9600 and payload of 2,340

In both resources, the GVWR is the same, it seems to be the curb weight that varies...

Hmmm...

Any help is truly appreciated...

Wrong. Curb weight includes fuel. Curb weight is the way it would sit in your driveway

LOL - Here's how it's sitting in my driveway right now!!! :)

I'm disgusted that you would put the general public at risk carrying a load like that. Your front tires are ready to come off the ground, your back suspension is either riding on, or nearly riding on the axle, your stopping distance would be grossly increased, and your tires are likely not rated for that kind of load.

Just because the truck doesn't break, doesn't mean its okay. You do need an appropriate truck do do the job, one that is designed to handle the load properly... or in your case, a trailer, again properly set up would do well too.

Are you kidding me she handled the road like a champ! steering was not compromised never went over 35 and had orange flags and hazards on.....it was 3 inches till the axle my tires were rated for the weight and my brakes worked just fine...Just because a truck is loaded doent mean is unsafe.....I have done this many times before with my dodge with out ever a hiccup.to tell you the truth id still have her if i didnt get in to a crash with her...(unloaded) So now we got a bigger 1500..........

Sorry to hear you crashed her... I had a '97 shortbed 4x4 - I loved that truck.

You should consider a 2500 - the handling under load is amazing compared with my 2010 1500 and the casual observer wouldn't even notice that the truck iis anything except level.
