I've been unable to find an answer to this question. I'll be purchasing a 2017 DRW before April.

Aside from the tow rating differences and axle ratio itself, are there any other mechanical differences between a 3.73 and a 4.10? Are there any other differences like brakes, suspension, cooling, programming, etc etc?

I'll be pulling 19,000 a few times a year, the rest of the year I'm just over 16,000. However almost all of my trips include going up and down parleys summit in Utah. Several trips climbing dirt roads like soapstone basin pass. If there are other differences, I'll likely lean towards the 4.10 gear ratio.

Thx.

I think that you want regret getting the 4.10 gears ratio, I have the 4.10 gears and the 3.73 gears nothing else different beside towing more.

With that much weight, get the 4.10s. I would have if i was. But i won't ever forseeably tow north of 10k with my truck so the 3.73s are ok for me

As stated above, with that much weight go for the 4.10's for sure. You won't regret it. The rings and pinions front and rear are the only difference between the two. Nothing else.

OP, this is a DRW Cummins? You didn't state that, but with that much weight, I'm hoping it is. What speed do you tow at? If you're towing around 70 as Utah the speed limit is 80 then the 3.73s may yield better fuel economy. If you're not on the freeway much and mainly tow the mountain passes at slower speeds then go 4.10s. Not sure what the RPM's are at with the Cummins and 4.10s at 70, but I'd assume over/around 2000.

His first post states DRW in the top line. So yes, that is correct.

Tire size will also affect the RPM at any given speed. So another question would be if the OP plans to stick with the stock tires or plans to upgrade to something a little bigger.

In a SRW, yes. DRW can get 3.42's, 3.73's, or 4.10's still.

He said DRW yes, but not if it was a Cummins. That's what I was wondering. Not if it was a single or dual rear wheel. Should have specified. It's got to be a Cummins though.

You're part correct, in the SRW configuration the 3500 Cummins come with 3:42 ratio only, the DRW configurations gives you axle ratio choices based on how much weight you are planning to tow.

This is what I was thinking also but since I don't know much about the cummins I didn't say nothing on it.

Thanks for the replys.

Truck will be used 90% towing at freeway speeds. I keep my speeds around 70 miles an hour. Yes Cummings.

Crazy that the only difference is the gear ratio. You pick up 5000 towing capacity just because of the axle ratio.

I'm always climbing or going down a stee grade. Slc to bear lake, flaming gorge, Jordanelle, rockport, strawberry, the high Unitas. Etc etc.

It's not so much a lack of horsepower or torque now a days, all 3 of the HD put out a ridiculous amount.

What to do.... what to do. Too bad you can't do extended test drives whIle towing. I'd even pay.

Man, my current 2500 with the 68RFE feels like a sloth compared to the 3500 Dually I test drove yesterday.

I tow at or just north of 17k lbs, although my truck can handle it, I know I'm towing in Dually territory.

Drove a 2017 Crew Cab dually with the Aisin and 4.10's and it blew me away. Much more crisp throttle response than what my 2014 2500 has. Also, you can feel that push real low in the RPM.
Yes, it is at 2000 RPM @ 70 MPH which is tough to see. Don't imagine the MPG will be great, the screen was reading between 13-15 at that speed.

I think the sweet spot on that is 65mph, right around 1800 RPM. But getting so much weight rolling, the way it felt empty, I'm sure it wont have as much trouble going as my 2500 does moving my 30 foot gooseneck with my john deere tractor on it.
