I've got a 13 6.7 ctd and I'm thinking about trading it for a 6.4. My 6.7 is a dog compared to my past trucks. Had a 95 V10, 97 5.9 cummins, 05 cummins and still have my 04.5 duramax with 332780 on the clock and all of them seemed to pull better and got better mileage pulling than my 13. I'm really interested in the 6.4. I pull a 32 ft cattle trailer and was wondering if anyone has pulled heavy with the 6.4. By heavy I mean I can put around 16000 in the trailer. So I do push 30000 sometimes.

You're too heavy for the 6.4. I would stick w/ the 6.7 and get lower gearing. Either re-gear or buy new/used. If you already have the Aisin transmission a re-gear my be less expensive in the long run. If you don't have the Aisin I would buy new/used with necessary tow package to meet your needs

I don't think the 6.4 would have a very long, happy life pulling that much weight.

To much weight for the gasser stick with the diesel and if it feels sluggish gear it lower. 4.10 4.56 ect probably the cheepest fix and make the biggest difference. I had a 95 f-150 with the dog of a 5.0, that thing would pull better than my 06 4.6 with 3.55 and it had a solid 50 horse and 30-40 tq more plus a better transmission. Rear gear will make the biggest difference.

It's not that often I will hit that weight. My last load with my 13 I only had 8300 pounds in the trailer and the truck couldn't pull it in 6th gear. And my average mpg went down to 5.6. I do a lot of just running around on the farm just checking fields and tractors and I'm just thinking about going to gas. This truck does not get very good mileage doing that either. It stays around 12

Your not really supposed to use 6th gear when pulling a trailer

If it is in tow haul mode it will use whatever gear it can run in, whether it be 6th or 5th. If the trans starts to overheat it will automatically shift into 5th or 4th anyways.

Another thought. Buy a used diesel 1 ton and keep it around for the heavy work. Good buys can be had with around 100K miles. If you get a standard cab and 2wd all the better. No one wants these and good prices exist. Then buy a second vehicle as a daily driver.
I've known several farmers who take this route. A pre-2007 diesel will get around the EPA issues that strangle fuel mileage and power. They then often buy a second 3/4T gasser for daily work and driving.
Again, buying used. Lot's of people buy 3/4T gas trucks and don't like the fuel economy. Personally, I'm waiting for a couple of years for the 6.4 to be available on the used truck market

That's a pretty good idea if you can swing it. Get you a gas 5.7. 3/4 4wd with 4.10 for daily or even a 1/2 ton with the 8 speed and 3.92 gears it'll pull 9000lbs, and a 5.9 diesel reg cab dually. It'll get your best of both worlds. Plus the reg cab 2wd will yield the highest towing capacity.

You'll see a lot of flaming responses to this, but I pull a 39' toy hauler with mine averaging around 14k with 3.73 gears and my truck barely grunts. Went to Inland Truck to inquire about changing out to 4.10's, but the guy explained that the final drive ratio was already closer to 4.23 and I wouldn't gain that much by switching. The longest pull I've made is 1000 mile round trip to South Padre and back, moderate hills, with a stiff head wind. I averaged around 8 mpg, which wasn't unexpected, and I stayed in 4th gear the majority of the time around 2500 rpm. I do this on occasion, not every day, so I have no regrets not going with the CTD.

You do this with a 6.4?
