The housing comes complete withthe gear set and everything all you do is replace the housing and attach the drive shaft and and the two axles and then regear the back to match

Hi, I have a 2015 with the 8spd and 3.21 gear(open) configuration. I got the truck in a deal so didn't have a choice. But unfortunately I'm beginning to use it to tow cars here and there. I have an auto hauler. Used to have a Cummins which was amazing at towing but well I needed a 4 dr. I already tried hauling the car hauler with just my atv on it and I found the truck
Constantly searching for gears and getting horrid mpg. Now my idea was to get 3.92 gears and a locker but I can't seem to find a good deal on some. I did find a 3.55 and 4.10 option for a good value but not sure if the work is worth for 3.55s and I'm afraid 4.10s are a bit high as it is my daily driver.

Anyone on here have 4.10s on their 8spd that can help me out? What is your rpm range unloaded on the highway at 70?

I am definitely hauling WAY more weight than you, I won't get into how much on here cause the Forum Lawyers will jump all over me. I love the way this truck pulls. I lock it in M6 and I anticipate hills when necessary. To me it's an RPM game, not a speed game, if people want to pass me, then pass me, lol I'm in no hurry.

My uncle used it to pull his and said it pulled decent. Like mentioned before, IM SURE the 3.21 are just fine, but not for me. Higher gearing WILL make the truck tow better and operate better with weight behind it. But which gearing is why I started this post lol, I’d like to hear those who have them and which ones they have etc. If I do end up keeping it I will tow with it as I already do until I make the decision of what gears to throw in. It is VERY different went coming from a diesel. I’m sure if any of you tried it you wouldn’t go back lol, I always thought it wouldn’t either but I have a basically new truck in my hands I can use mean time till I can jump into a 4th gen mega. Love my cummins but the extended/quad as a daily is gonna run out.

Another thing is mpg. I get a solid 17mpg if not better loaded down pretty heavy. I’m sure the gasser will do ok but at least over 10mpg would be nice

I don't see why you'd not be able to get over 10mpg with your truck and steeper gears.

Towing a 23' 6k lb TT, combo of highway and mountains i was averaging 11.4 mpg with my 2500 6.4/3.73 combo with the trans in m5 (6th locked out) not too bad at all.

That’s a good combo! Bigger engine doesn’t always mean less mpg.

Example: dads z71 with 5.3 and 3.73 around town would get 17mpg and 7-8.5mpg towing. Whereas my SS has the HO 6.0 and full-time awd with 4.10s. I would get 14-15mpg if I was lucky around town. Usually 13.8ish. Towed with it a few times averaged between 11.8-12mpg.

So I’m thinking with the higher gears it’ll get pretty good mileage considering the 5.7 has a good amount of power. It’ll be more efficient. But that’s why I ask those with higher gears, then it gets to a certain point where it’s too much gearing and it no longer becomes efficient after 70+ etc.

Seems like a lot of extra work if you only tow like ...what, 20x per year. Just limit the gears (that's what the Tow mode is 'for'), and see if there is a dealer update. I did read on another website there were some software upgrades. Those were for trucks newer than mine so I don't remember exactly what they were.

Well 4.10s a locker will make the truck a hell of a lot more fun to drive lol so it’s not JUST for towing only.

Didn’t like towing that thing much. Cruise control was unusable it kept downshifting and getting stuck in the gear. But in the city it did pretty decent.

Tows the camper quite well. But then again it’s only a 20 footer. And not heavy.

I think even with the 3.91(?) it could of brought it would of been perfect for my needs. But once again I ask who has the 4.10s?

Are you trying to keep it in 8th gear or somthing ?
I could pulled that truck in 7th gear at 70+ all day long there is no reason it should be searching all over for gears pulling that little chevy. I mean hell even locking it in 6th gear it should have pulled that easy. Do you have the V6 ?

If you are swapping gears for sure go to 4:10 otherwise 3:92s would be the next option.

Nope I even left it in 7 and 6 like you guys mentioned before. It struggled to stay over 70 without constantly going down a gear and Revving over 3k. Best I got it was out of cruise control and feathering around the throttle to keep it at around 2400 rpms.

Wow thats crazy, when I pull my camper I just put it in 6th and go and it stays in 6th at 65mph and pulls it easy.
Are you pulling in the mountains or really long hills ?

Lower gears will help no doubt but just dont understand why it dont want to stay in a gear like 6th pulling something like that .

I’m in Florida! Haha. It definitely feels so much better with this camper. Maybe even with just a tune or like the other user mentioned I may need a software update. It definitely did better than the first time I towed with it now that I played with it a little more and fiddled with the gears. But **** nothing like my damn diesel. Just gonna have to swap the damn thing haha.

Wonder why your truck is searching for gears, I put mine in 7th on the selector and go and it does not search for gears.
Even in the mountains pulling a loaded down twin axle 6x12 enclosed trailer it did not search for gears, grant it I pull up a mountain for what seamed like 10 miles in 6th gear but it picked a gear everytime and it stays in it.

It isn't searching because you bypass the mds system. I disable mine like you did and no searching. Hate the mds !!!!

How do you disable? Is that through tuning only? Only thing I’ve found is it allowing it to show the eco on the screen but not actually turn it odd
