Hello all, new to the site and hope I can get a few questions answered. About towing capacities. I have a 2013 Ram 1500 quad cab with the 3.6 liter 8 speed trans. With the 3.21 gear ratio. I would like to change the ratio to the 3.55. for the 2013 year. it list the max towing for the 3.21 at 4100 lbs and 6100 lbs for the 3.55 However I looked up the 2015 year model with the same everything engine, trans and it is showing 4700 lbs for the 3.21 and 7600 for the 3.55. Does anybody have a clue why there is such a difference in the 2 figures. Especially the 3.55 gear ratio 6100 compared to 7600 lbs in the 2 model years. Is it possible they just under rated the 2013 year. Also does any one know what a fair price the get the gear ratio changed. Thanks

It's underated would be my guess there is no other changes that I am aware of. Changeing the gears won't legaly change your towing capacity you still have to go by the gvcw atleast that what dot will go by. As far as changeing the gears cost will be in the 12-1500 range if your 2wd

price is pretty reasonable if you have 2wd and really if you're gonna do it you might as well just go with the 3.92. pretty sure if you have 4wd it's not even close to worth it

also as said above your truck will be more capable but if ever pulled over they will go by the door sticker so legally you still have the lower tow limit

They underrated the 2013 tow ratings for the engines coupled with 8 speed transmissions. MY 2014+ reflect the changes.

The 14's are SAE J2807 compliant for tow rating IIRC, the '13's were probably conservatively rated if I had to guess.

Sure makes it LOOK better that there was an increase after using the new tow standard :hmm:
