Sorry if this has been asked before. I did a search but did not find anything that helped.

I just bought a 2012 Ram with the Hemi and a 4 inch lift. It does not have a hitch, but does have the removable plug for a hitch ball. This will not work for me because the truck his lifted. It does have both wiring plugs.

Can someone lead me in the right direction. Is there a receiver that just mounts under the bumper, or do I need to buy a complete hitch? I am only looking to tow my pontoon and trailer, and a single landscaping trailer (16 feet long)?

Thanks for your help, and I apologize if I missed a thread section that has the information.

It's better to buy the whole hitch That mounts to the frame, I personally wouldnt trust those small under bumper hitches with a pontoon boat my friend, here's a link hope it helps. :)

I agree. Class 4 hitch will be a great choice

They beat me 2 it, if your pontoon is anything like mine, a under the bumper will not cut it as it will rip it off the bumper, you need one that mounts to the frame

That is the funny thing about this truck. It looks like a hitch under the bumper without a receiver, but maybe it is the way the bumper just looks. Maybe I will go to the dealer just to see if there is a part number for a hitch.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate everyone's help.

I went to the dealer, had the same issue. It's very strange the way it's set up. The piece that goes from one side of the frame to the other is there, just not the part for the draw bar to go in. I think I paid $125 for the hitch from Chrysler. It bolts to the piece your truck already has and then has a large bolt that runs through the hitch ball hole in your bumper. According to the dealer, exact same towing capacity as a truck that comes with it. I have towed plenty of rather heavy loads, not one single problem.

EDIT: Nine5Three beat me to it. They must have changed their ratings.

Yea, my 06 Ram didn't have the receiver, but the whole tube and everything was already there. The dealer sold me a receiver piece that bolted up to that tube. It wasn't rated as high as the factory welded hitch and made me nervous every time I pulled with it. Unless their design changed, I would try and replace the whole thing.

I just went through this with my 2011. If it's like mine, it depends on how much weight you need to tow.

The receiver that mounts to the hitch bar that is already there is a class III and rated at 600lbs tongue weight and 6000 lbs trailer weight. With a weight distribution hitch, it goes up to 1000lb tongue / 10,000lb trailer.

This is the one I got and it mounts with 3 bolts - One through the bumper and two through the frame hitch bar. super simple install!

If you need a class IV, then you would need something like this which gives you the 1000/10000 rating standard, or 1200/12000 with weight distribution:

I've had good service with Etrailer over the years.

Hope that helps!

I got one like that through Mopar and have been towing with it pretty regularly - nothing serious, probably 1500 pounds. Couldn't be happier, zero issues.

Yeah, The one I linked to earlier for $99.95 is perfect for me rated at 600/6,000 and 1000/10,000 with weight distribution. Mt 4.7 ram is only rated at like 7100 lbs towing anyway.

I just towed my light weight hybrid camper for the first time with this truck last weekend. The camper has a gross weight of only 3,500 lbs but is 8 feet wide and 10 feet tall with the AC on the roof. That means lots of surface to catch wind.

I do have an Equal-i-zer brand weight distribution hitch that I LOVE. I mainly like it for the sway control that it provides and I really needed the WD when I was towing the camper with a Chevy Colorado.

The Ram was AWESOME towing my camper!

Hey does that Curt 13333 hitch allow the plastic cover in the bumper to pop back on?

I'm thinking about getting one of these but a ton of reviews I read say that once you install it the bumper hole cover no longer clicks on.

Thanks
