I just went through the same thing. Traded my 1500 for a 2500. I use an e2 WDH. I replaced the shank to a 2.5 inch. It was $180 but worth it to me to not use the adapter when towing 8000 pounds.

Keep the head and replace just the shank.

I didn't see anything saying not to use the adaptor for towing. Was that a sticker on your adapter? Or in the manual?

Are you sure it doesn't mean the adapter ALONE isn't to be used for towing ??

As in the pin goes thru the hitch, the adapter, AND in insert vice a pin thru the adapter & hitch, then another pin thru the adapter & insert ??

Googling them, it appears if the adapter has a collar made onto it, it is for accessories and not for towing, but if it has no collar, so it can do put in as a sleeve and have only 1 pin go thru the hitch, sleeve, & insert, and in no way lengthens the hitch bar, then it can be used for towing.

For your WD hitch, I'd look at welding a collarless sleeve on the hitch insert

Is the Reese a little shorter than the one that came with the truck? If so, that could explain why they say not for use with WDH. The adapter would need to be at least as long as the WDH shank.

Just a guess. It looks a little shorter, but hard to tell.

I would be curious what Reese says about that warning.

If a hitch adaptor is not for towing, what is it for, a bumper-dumper? Liability lawyers have strangled everything.

That's just stunned. I went to etrailer and there is a reese sleeve that can be used with a WDH and one that can't. How stupid is that? Why not just have one for all?

I contacted Reese to ask them about this. Here is the response:

Good afternoon Rod. I assume you are talking about the 2.5 to 2” reducer part# 70287. There will be a running change on this unit. It has been determined that you can use this reducer with a WD hitch and the determination was just made within the last 2 months, so there will be units still out there on the shelves stating otherwise.
