I tow an 8k travel trailer,, only use tow/haul mode if the trans starts to hunt,, depends on speed, wind and load in truck.. I have an 2015 outdoorsman with 5.7 and 3.92 gear 4x4 .. milage is always around 16 mpg with trailer on and without at cruise set 58 mph indicated average is 24 to 26 depending on head wind.. Live here in Northern Ontario running hwy 17 from Soo to Sudbury... Also like that Shell gas,, I'm sure there is 1.5 mpg with recomended 87 silver grade.. Last truck sold with 420k miles ( hate that metric, can't figure anything out ) no troubles on a sport model.. best rear gear in my opinion is 3.92, doesn't lug like the 3.55 which is set up for milage not gofast or towing.. Sport always hunted gears while towing and always used tow haul mode on that truck.. (2012 ) milage was at best 19.5 if carefull on gas pedal.. lol..
Hope this helps a bit
Doug

Tow/Haul holds the shift points longer but also will downshift the trans to utilize engine braking while applying the brakes. If I remember correctly, it also enables the Hill Start Assist (if selected) and also the trucks electronic Trailer Sway Control.
(edited below: the HSA is turned on and off by the EVIC but changes operation when the Tow/Haul is enabled)

On the eight speed, the hill start assist is always on.

I tow 6k-7k lbs regularly. On fairly level ground I leave tow/haul off. It likes to stay in 7th gear too long in my opinion on the highway. I'd rather lug the motor a little more.

I do use it in hilly areas for the engine braking, but honestly I've gone down some pretty good hills and the cruise control works just fine to maintain speed without tow/haul on.

Mine is a 2014 regular cab with full bolt ons, 3.92 rear gear, and airbags as well. Pulls that much weight like it's hardly there.

If the trailer is hitched up (which is 95% of the time) I always use tow/haul.

I was off slightly about the Hill Start Assist and the interaction with the Tow/Haul mode.

You can turn the Hill Start Assist off through the EVIC/DID. The HSA has nothing to do with the transmission is in the truck. I have the 8 speed and the HSA works good when pulling a boat out of the water.

I run 15-20 deg cooler on the tranny temps when using T/H while towing. Worth it to me
