Good morning guys,

I need some assistance. I went to hook up my tt for the first time last night to move it to the other side of my house to an area i can prep it for the camping season. Epic Fail. Couldn't even hook up.

The shank i was using with my 15 Silverado i had the head near the top of the shank with the Silverado. I knew this ram was quite a bit taller than the Chevy, so i moved the head all the way to the bottom of the shank. Well, even with it that way, and with the trailer tongue jack all the way up, i still couldn't get the ball under the trailer tongue!

I measured 21" to the top of the ball with the camper about where i think it needs to be to tow level. I think I measured (don't have it in front of me here ) 26 or 27" to the top of the ball with the shank i have now, so i know i need at least another 6+ inches of drop to even be close.

I did do an axle relocation on my old Layton so it sits higher than stock.

What drop 2.5" shanks are you fellow TT guys using? These shanks are $120+ so i don't want to order one and make a big mistake. I don't know what drop my current one is either or I'd just add 7" to that and give one a shot.

I love my ram, she is a biggin! Lol. I'm just not sure how/where to measure on my truck to figure this out.

Thanks much for any help or suggestions. Have a good day guys.

Had the same problem I went with this but its only 2" shank. For the extra cost I didn't see any benefit to spending the extra cash on a 2.5" shank. The 2" is rated well above my 30' TT and with the reducer sleeve that came with the truck it fits just fine. And I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) most WDH heads are standard 2" so the only difference between a 2" and 2 1/2" shank is the part that slides into the trucks receiver. One thing I will say is this hitch looked HUGE when it arrived. I thought I was going to have to send it back. But when I installed everything I only have one hole of drop adjustment left . https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Curt/C17123.html

This shank is good for 6 1/2" drop with a trunnion style hitch and 8" with round bar I believe.

Thanks for that. I did some searching on you tube and found that you measure the distance from the top of the receiver tube to the ground.

Then bottom of trailer coupler to ground and subtract the trailer measurement from the receiver measurement for the amount of drop you need.

My issue is my rig sits on a slope in my yard so it's not a level surface. So i have to eyeball the trailer level with the tongue jack, then measure. Not very good. From what i see, if I'm even closer i need about a 6-7" drop.

Correct, difference is the part that goes into the receiver is 2.5"

Is that about what you guys have?

Thanks

I have a 2015 2500 and an Equalizer hitch. I bought a 9" drop hitch and am on the bottom hole. Trailer is a 2015 Jayco and rides level.

It depends on your hitch. For my TT I use a Blue Ox setup and use a 9" drop with 12" length. I like the longer shank as it provides an extra 3" of clearance for the trailer behind my truck. I could still open the tailgate with the standard 9" one but it was about a half inch away from the electric tongue jack.

Thanks. I did end up buying the curt 17124, which, on the top adjustment hole i was still 1.5" or so nose low. I'm returning that to amazon and bought the curt 17123, which should work perfect. The 17123 is 13 or so inches overall vertical shank, the 17124 14 or so. Even on the 17123i will still have 2 holes of downward adjustment if i need to go lower.

I always make the trailer level, measure to the top of the coupler. Then I'll set my ball to be ~2" above that, since you can expect about that much rear sag when hooked up.
