2012 2500 CCSB 4x4 Hemi 3.73 with 66re

2012 Flagstaff FK26S (front kitchen, slide, approx 8k lbs)

Never tow over 65 mph. The trailer speed limit is determined by the trailer's tires. All ST rated trailer tires have a 65 mph max speed limit. Anything faster invites blowouts. Even at 65 mph I have had 1year old new tires blowout.

Loaded in the Texas hills I just leave the trans locked in 4th gear at 2,600 rpms at 65 mph and let the cruise control work. Will occasionally drop to 3rd at 3,500 rpms on steep hills. Towing mpgs are 8-9.

I have owned 1 Duramax, 1 5.9 cummins, and 1 6.7 cummins. My favorite was the 5.9 but the 4 speed auto trans was junk. The 6.7 had constant dpf issues. As a whole package I really like the Hemi with 66re 6 speed. The 6 speed really lets you the most out of the hemi. Plus, my current hemi gets the same mpgs as the same equipped 6.7 I owned. Even better for me now that diesel cost $0.50 more per gallon.

Just my opinion... :)

Hi out there. I have a 2010 2500 HD with the factory tow package and 4:10s. I currently pull a bumper pull 2 car trailer and want to go up to a 3 car gooseneck. any idea on towing limits in the gooseneck area? Thanks

You should be fine because your payload is about 2400 lbs or something like that but maybe some of the pros will chime in.

That's very courteous of you, Zogg.
I would love to try a 2500 for comparison, to see if it handles towing in the wind much differently.

the heavier chassis is a night and day difference we just got our 28' tt out of winter storage and i had to run it with the WD hitch that was still setup for my 06 f150 for about 20 miles to the rv dealership for annual inspection and all i can say is damn. i used to thin my 5.4 was pretty awesome for towing now im not so sure about that lol

My trailer is 7800lbs loaded. It's just over 33 ft in length, and just over 11 ft in height. I usually have 300~500lbs pounds in the bed, and 550 lbs of human in the cab. The truck does great. On the flat I get 10-11 mpg. You have to pull over a pass in almost every direction here, and I have seen as low as 7.25 on the 9300 ft pass.

I had a Titan before, and the truck would get handled any time something big passed or the wind was high. The RAM doesn't seem to even notice. The towing experience is night and day. I have towed up to 6 hours without being tired in the RAM, while the I was worn out after about an hour in the Titan.

Please keep your towing below 65. Unless you have upgraded to LT tires, your ST tires are rated at 65 mph. Anything above that is inviting disaster, and dangerous for everyone else on the road.

I tow a 29ft 9600# tt with ours 5.7 3.73 just did a trip out of erie pa to bar harbor me coming home over the second highest point on i90 1729ft above sea level hit bottom of 6 mile long grade at 72 and 212ft above sea level pulled 68 over the top. Granted it was in 3rd for the last 2 miles but i dont feel its underpowered, but then again i used to tow with a 5.4 so the hemi is a dream machine

I did it, I won't be going back to the 1500. Lol

As for the original poster. A properly setup half ton "can" pull it. So the 2500 should as well. My 1500 had a max tow rating of 10,200. It handled my trailer, but I put air bags on the truck, 2 sway bars, and wdh with it. Pulled a 360 mile round trip no issues, wind didn't bother it a whole lot, but with the hemi, you knew you were working it. Never got past 4th gear.

New rig is 2500 diesel, wish I would of done this long ago. The trailer doesn't phase it. No more 10-15mph drop on big hills, etc. if you can swing it, go with the diesel. Or at least the 6.4L

Have a 2014 2500HD with the 6.4. Towing a 13K plus Keystone Cougar Toy Hauler. First towing experience with the 3.73 gears, the engine has ample power but in the higher elevations and steep grades, if you can't hit the bottom of hills at about 50 mph, you will find that the engine can't get the rpms to get into the power band. First gear equals about 1000 rpm per 10 mph. Got at best 8 mpg towing even in the lower elevations of SD. After the re gear to 4.56, now getting 8 at the least but able to pull with much less effort and rpms. That said, haven't yet drove much on interstate hi ways or long stretches to really get an accurate mpg. We stay mostly to the back roads where the scenery is. Towing speeds, if have to be on interstate, 65 to possibly 70 depending on traffic flow. On secondary roads, 55 to 60. Want to see where I've been. The truck suspension handles the 5'er very well even in side winds. Braking also seems strong but generally rely on engine braking as much as possible. Overall, the Ram is well suited especially in the handling and braking departments.

Yeah and that's is what I was talking about an aftermarket gears for the new truck, you know when these truck first come out theirs not a shop or a company that have the gears to fit into the new trucks, now to find a shop that will do it is what I need to do, I will put this on my list to do.

That's a good looking trailer did you build it or have it built?

Thanks:

I had this custom built. They do make a trailer like this, it is shorter and only 2 axle. I ordered it longer, ~34' with a 3rd axle. upgraded or added some other items, like electrical for AC, Bull-dog hitch and some other minor stuff.

I went with this design Enclosed / open, cause I have a few off-road trucks. They can get muddy, and one is too tall for enclosed. The enclosed part will be out fitted as a shop.

It is decently a great idea keeps the floor clean and your tools safe. One day I would like to have the one that's a pop up on one side and open floor for quads and bikes. What does that bad boy weigh empty?
