i am going to buy a 2002 dodge 1500 v8 and was told that the 1500 is a 1/2 ton pick up truck, and that i would need either a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton to pull my camper that roughtly weighs about 12k lbs

would i be able to do somethign to the suspension to make it capable of hauling the 12k lbs

Thanks in advance

Also power and torque because it's an 02 so it is probably a 5.9.

They are right. The hitch and frame aren't rated for that load, either.

You wrote you are going to buy, if it is not a done deal, I don't want to **** on your parade but,,, Don't buy it to pull your camper, save your money for at least a 2500 with the Hemi minimum.

Have you towed the camper with another rig?

Check the max tow rating on 2500's as well. Some 2500's are not rated to tow 12000 lbs.

i towed it honestly with a 2005 dodge durango about 1000 miles and it sagged in the rear end and ended up over heating but other then that was pulling fine

Holy ****, your a brave man LOL.
Seriously though, you need a 2500 or 3500 for yours and everybody else on the roads safety.
You can get by with a gas with the right gearing, but if your planning on towing in elevation or any serious hills, you would be allot happier towing with a Diesel. 12K# is a pretty heavy camper.

Also if your Durango was a Hemi, you will be seriously disappointed with the power of the old 5.9 Magnum V8 in a 3/4 Ton truck (2002 and older)
That's why I said 3/4 ton Hemi minimum.
But power to pull the load is not your main concern in my opinion. A 2500/3500 truck is heavier, bigger brakes, axles, frame, steering components, suspension, E rated tires, etc.
You don't want the tail wagging the dog.

With the kids running up the prices on Cummins 2500s and 3500 SRW's (I saw a 2006 with over 100k miles for $27k today), your best bet would be a DRW 3500. The kids don't want to actually haul stuff, so they haven't run the prices on them up as bad. For someone like me who needs to buy a truck to haul an RV with, they've really screwed me over. 10 year old trucks shouldn't cost that much and didn't before the big diesel craze of the last few years.

If you're looking for a dedicated tow rig, try to find one of the 24V 5.9 Cummins in 2500 or 3500. The 2nd gen trucks can still be found at a decent price, because nobody wants the looks of the second gen.
