Used the truck for the first time today to tow (anything with weight that is) I picked up a 95 Pontiac grand prix for my daughters first car,and used a 17' flat bed trailer. Pretty disappointed in the sluggish pulling power the truck had,as well as the weak and softness the rearend was. So anyone have any suggestions for performance modifacations. And I'm thinking about installing some bags for towing. The truck is a 2007 hemi 1500 quad cab with K&N CAI and chock master catless catback.

Should always mention gear ratio when complaining abou towing
People often buy trucks (used more often) with out ever considering the gear ratio the truck has vs. what they'll be doing with it because the price is right

What are you comparing your towing experience to? Guessing your trailer was about 5,500 lbs?

How many miles on the ram? Mines 06 with 102k. Need a tune up? Many little things can factor into this but as said gear ratio is a good one. My ram has 3.55s so I don't expect to be towing my house around... even though she'd try her darndest.

How is the tranny as well... If you have a pressure problem in the tranny it will perform really badly under load.

Also if you have oversized tires it impairs the towing capacity as much as the gear ration in the axles.

My 2 cents

If the exhaust has been opened up too much with larger diameter pipes the exhaust velocity will be slower and there will be a loss of low end torque. You could change the gears or possibly improve the performance with a tuner. I'm looking at getting air bags for mine as well.

Just waiting to hear back as I am guessing gears as mentioned above. This is huge factor when towing.

I'm not sure of the gears? But im thinking around 3.90. I have the sport model if that matters? Im not comparing it to anything unparticular, just seemed and I would have thought it would have more umph t it for having the hemi and the power its suppose to. I was told it has the most power in its class for that year? I have 76xxx miles on it,so I don't know if it needs tuned up? It runs great and has tons low end torque. It didn't do to bad on flat ground. But the hills/mountains here in Washington gave it a challenge.

Last year I towed a 7,000lb travel trailer with my 2006 which still had the stock the stock motor, 17" wheels and 3.73 gears. We have a few hills here and like you said it did better on level ground and just OK on the inclines. I towed the same trailer with my Dad's 2011 F350 7.3 Powerstroke and I could hardly tell it was back there.

I don't buy the 3.92 gears unless it was either special ordered with them or it has 20" wheels.

Either way, unless you expected it to perform like it was unloaded it couldn't have been as bad as you think. You were likely between 6500 and 7k which is only about 1k-1500ish shy of your max towing capacity.

Can't expect it to run 0-60 in 6-7 seconds pulling that much weight. And hills/mountains? Forget it, you would be very hard pressed with a brand new truck to maintain 65 in the mountains.

When I pulled my current boat in the mountains with my '04 2500 5.7 with 3.73 years it never got above 60mph running it to the floor. You have to be realistic of what a half ton with probable 3.55 gearing can do.

I have a 2004 ram quadcab 4x4 sport with the 5.7 stock for the most part (I added a flowmaster muffler), and mine tows just fine for a gas motor. I was actually surprised how well it towed for me. I was coming from towing with a duramax for years. I usually tow a 97 jeep wrangler with an old heavy steel trailer about 16 feet long. I can tow up the grapevine at 45mph steady. I get 9.5 mpg average while towing.

Gas vs diesel I should hope so!

Gotta be kidding... You can't compare a Diesel vs Gas engine. For the same HP a diesel can sometimes boast more than twice the torque of a Gas engine, which is why the guys that tow all the time have diesel trucks...

And that's why I sold my 05 1500 w/Hemi and 3.92 gearing in favor of my 6.7.
Towing a 16ft tandem axle trailer with quads and camping gear sucked going over Snoqualmie pass. Between the horrible fuel mileage (8mpg) and the constant gear searching it only took one summer of towing before I traded the Hemi in.
