Hello, I just bought a 1986 dodge 250. I'm a Chevy guy for the most part, but my old man loves dodges and they don't seem bad. I have a question about the 4speed manual. I know 1st gear is unsycronized, but is second gear also? It shifts but will grind if you don't know when to shift(it doesn't matter much anyway because we start out in second gear). I believe it's the np435 trans. Also sometimes when you get in the throttle too soon after shifting there's a clanking noise ? I thought u joints but it seems tight? Another thing : I'm gonna guess the clutch needs replacing soon because it doesn't really engage until your almost all the way out of the clutch? Its kinda hard to get started rolling especially on a hill haha. Its a old farm truck and I know it'll probably need work. Just seeing what I can do to keep it going a while. Or maybe these are just dodge things? I do not know, my first time with a dodge.

If it is the np435, 2nd through 4th is synchronized, 1st and reverse arent. 1st is granny gear. Just from my experience with mine, it's much less forgiving with shift points than other manual cars I've had. Can't really say I've experienced the clanking noise you mentioned...gear synchros could be going out? Good luck with the truck.
