So I've put 2 qt of oil in this thing over about 200 mi. I know it leaks, but it doesn't smoke that bad and I DAMN well know it's not leaking 2 qt worth of oil.

that 1 low compression cylinder is probably burning it all up. did you ever to a wet compression test on that cylinder?

Well, the cylinders were all pretty close and the ones on the drivers side were "okay" so that's what puzzles me. And no I didn't.
I think that's your "smoking gun" right there....cough...cough. ;)

Valve seals, piston rings, leaks......an overhaul might be the way to go. 2¢

ha-ha! :bleh:

Overhaul would be great. :( New rings, mild cam, rebuilt carb, shaved heads, etc....

all it takes is 1 low compression cylinder to suck in and burn lots of oil. it may not always smoke like it but it is burning oil.

Went and bought a couple stainless nuts and bolts of the exhaust coupler today. I have the feeling they might be too small.

What do you think, Crazzzzzzzzy?

100_6729_zpsb19cf282.jpg

They're 3/8 by 2 inches long. Here is where I'm concerned: the old nuts use a 11/16 socket and the bolt head is a 5/8. But the new ones are 9/16 for both.

Do I actually need 1/2in bolts?

I've got a big block though, the manifolds ARE different.
Worst thing is I tear it all apart and they're wrong I guess. Got 3 other vehicles to use to drive to Lowes again. lol

Yeah, on and off. I was going to run a die over the bolt, but there are no threads exposed for me to do that. Bolt is *almost* too short for nut that's on there. lol
