I have a question for the people that are good with the electrical systems. I have a 1987 Dodge Ram W150, and when it is both under compression and not, it will show RPM jumps as much as 20-1500RPM. Especially when I take it out on the highway and get it up to 50mph or more. As the RPMs are jumping the tail lights will flicker. I just bought a new alternator, battery, and regulator not long ago, and it still does the same thing, if not a little worse now. It seems like its a wire thats loose and when you drive over a pot hole or crack in the road, it will wiggle, ground itself for a fraction of a second or something. Its such an electrical mess that i dont even know where to begin. Any suggestions with out having to rewire the whole thing and possibly having that not even being the problem? Thanks!

it is really hard to say where it start. is it just the tale lights flickering or is it all the lights in the truck flicker when it happens? best place to look for loose wires is on the drivers side fender. wiggle while you have the truck running or possibly look for arcing.

Its just the tail lights that will flicker. Im more concerned about the RPMs jumping as of right now, I want to get it fixed so that I can sell it for a descent price next summer possibly so i can continue to pay for my flight training.

I would take a close look at the battery cables and also all of the grounds. I had an 80 D100 that surged, dimmed and eventually wouldn't start. It ended up being a bad positive battery cable.

does the truck have the lean burn ignition system because i really don't know of any reason a carbed engine would jump up and down that much. if you have the lean burn ignition system there will be a computer behind the battery. if so i really do not know what to say. most people usually replace it with a 4 pin ignition system but i don't know how far you have to do to do the conversion.
