1986 Dodge Ram Van LE 318 factory propane in decent shape

So my van is one of those that clunks into drive already a bit.

But now it has been clunking when shifting from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3. It really clunks. One big clunk when it shifts. It happens at normal level of revs (for accelerating casually).

If I keep the revs very low (like lower than I would normally drive it, so that its a bit slower than traffic wants to go), it eases into gear and doesn't clunk. No noticeable issue.

Any ideas what this could be?

Maybe I shouldn't have said "Tranny" in the title of this post. I'm not a mechanic and can't be sure its the transmission.

Thanks for any tips or pointers.

have you check the fluid level in the trans and rear end? low fluid in the rear end could cause a clunk. also might want to check universal joint. they can also cause a clunk.
