I just recently purchased a 1990 Dodge W150 with the 5.2l 318 in it. I drove it about 80 miles back to my house, turned it off for 5 minutes to let the dog out, then came back out and it would not crank. It wont turn over, or even make a sound. I know that when some older trucks get really hot, you need to let them sit before you try to fire them up again, so I waited until the next morning to try again. It still wouldn't crank.

When I bought it, the guy said the coil pack would need to be replaced and showed me where it was sparking excessively. I replaced it thinking it was the issue, and got no start. I then replaced the starter relay. No start. Replaced the starter itself, no start again.

I'm not too familiar with this kind of stuff and would appreciate any information so that I'm not spending money on stuff I don't need to be. I have verified that the battery is good as well.

I have been reading up on anything that might pertain to the issue and have been told that it could be the ignition switch, the S wire, or the tension wire that goes to the coil pack. I am going to look at all of that later today and run a test light along everything. Any information is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Have you checked your starter? I had a car that did that to me and was going to remove it to have it tested. I would turn the key and not even a click. The big cable on the starter was very loose and that was my problem.

I replaced the starter yesterday and was still getting no result. I have been researching different possibilities and have compiled a list of the following:

crankshaft position sensor
transmission control solenoid
CPS
ASD relay
ignition switch
ASD relay pump
hall switch

I am going to look at all of the grounding wires today as well as the 14 gauge red wire that goes from the + battery terminal to the ASD relay. I'm going to replace all fuses as well. I just don't know what I should be looking at first to try to diagnose the issue.

is the engine spinning over when you turn the key? if not pull all the plug and then try again.

now if it is cranking and not firing you need to figure out what you are missing. do you have spark? if so spray something flammable down the throttle body and see what happens. i usually use flammable brake cleaner. no point in throwing any more money at parts without trouble shooting what might be your issue first.

I have a new battery in it and can't get the new battery to even light my test light up? So I'm trying to figure out why that is because I'm assuming that if the battery isn't lighting that up, then it won't produce spark anywhere

is your test light bulb any good? have you tried using the headlights to test for power or anything in the cab? also does it have aftermarket battery clamps that just bolt on? if so they are generally junk and cause all sorts of connection issues.
