Hey,
I have a 89 dodge ram d1500 318. So far it's been extremely trusty but lately it's been sticking in second gear and whenever I'm sitting at a light it will start to stall out unless I give it some gas then it's fine for a few seconds and then it does it again. I was thinking for the gear sticking if I should just replace the trans linkage. I'm up for any suggestions.
Thanks,
Matt

I would try to drop the trans pan and change out fluid and filter. If you know how adjust bands too. It may be clutch pack solenoid or something like that too. If this seems like to much of a job have a local transmission shop do it so you know what you have going.

Thanks. I'll try it later this week. Would you know of any other problems that could occur?

Could be the throttle body injection unit messing up. Could be the CPU also

Do you know what kind of tranny fluid it takes or where to find what kind it takes?

It being a 4sp manual likely means your stick shift bolts straight to the transmission housing. The shift forks inside might be worn out.

You likely should have the transmission freshened up at a transmission shop. :-(

The guy I got the truck from said that he replaced the fork and the clutch a little less than 20 miles ago so I don't know if that makes a difference

Can you take off in granny and shift to 3rd?

Does it only stick if you start in 2nd or is it anytime you shift into 2nd it doesn't want to come out?

It doesn't always stick in second. It'll stick every now and then but when it does itfeels like its not in gear and it's really sloppy. And I can start in second if it gets stuck I just can't go faster than 30 lol

I don't think it would be anything in the tranny because with the clutch disengaged the engine and tranny aren't connected I would check out injectors spark plugs wires throttle body anything that has to do with fuel and ignition tranny is most likely not the problem

Manual transmissions take gear oil, in my truck its 75:140 but you can go to any oreillys or oil change place and they can look it up for you.

With it being a manual the tranny isn't why its dying. Because when sitting still and the clutch disengaged the engine isn't even part of the tranny. Even if it is sticking that wont cause it to die. I would check all your fuel system such as injectors filter fuel pressure regulator and ignition system plugs and plug wires distributer coil. But I'm positive its not the tranny making it die. And it wouldn't really stick if it was a manual it would be stuck in that gear and come out because your shift fork is so warn out it would completely push it out of the drive gear cause you to not move when you put it in another gear.

So you're saying if I replace the fork then it won't get stuck anymore?
