Question Almost Done Hemi Swap, Question Regarding Fuel Pump
I have almost completed the engine swap in my 84 dodge ram from a 318 carb'd to a 5.7L Hemi from a 2012 ram. Everything is pretty well completed except for fuel delivery...
Some suggest buying a used gas tank from a new gen dodge which has the pump internally, but I'm looking to keep my current gas tank. What would be the best and most compatible external fuel pump (must be fuel injected compatible with at least 57psi)? Also, I'm pretty lost on if I need a regulator and return lines etc... any info at all would be helpful because I honestly don't know much about this stage of the project. Thanks

external pumps don't have a good reputation for lasting long which is why most people will usually go the extra mile and install a internal fuel pump. that way the fuel keeps them cool. i would maybe even look at 90's dodge truck fuel tanks. i am pretty sure they are similar to what you might have and they should have no problem putting out 57 psi.

Would it be hard to install an internal fuel pump in a late 90s gas tank?

You can run an A1000 external pump but you'll need an external pressure regulator. External pumps are a lot louder so be prepared for that noise. An in-tank is a better option and something like an Aeromotive Stealth 325 that you'll need to fab a bracket to run inside the tank. The Stealth doesn't need return lines, it can be used in the same configuration as the stock hemi but the A1000 would need return lines as it moves so much fuel; both would require a pressure regulator and the Aeromotive 13101 does the job. You can use generic FPRs as well, I just like the quality of the Aeromotive parts.

a late 90's gas tank would already have an internal fuel pump.

Thanks guys I think I will head to the local scrap yard tomorrow and try to find a gas tank from a 90s ram. I hope they had plastic tanks in those years. If I have no luck there I will probably try to mount a pump inside my current tank... time is becoming a bit of an issue so I pretty much just have to wrap this up as quick as possible and then maybe swap a couple things later on.

dodge have used plastic tanks since the 70's. don't forget to grab the connector and some harness as well just to make sure you got enough. here is some pictures of a 86 and 89 fuel tank side by side. 1 is larger but shape wise they are the same. it will kind of give you an idea when looking at the newer truck gas tanks. they looks very similar in shape to the 90's ram truck tanks. if you could find a 91-93 ramcharger tank that would probably be a nice tank for weight distribution and should work for what you want
