A few months ago I bought a very nice old '89 Ram from the family of the original owner that had passed away. It has 78,000 miles, is a D100 with the 4 speed overdrive automatic transmission, 2wd and a 318 (5.2L) engine with TBI. It runs and drives great but I have a question on the fuel mileage. Being realistic I didn't expect good mileage from the old truck and that was not an issue but I'm curious if it is normal for these trucks to get 10-11 mpg or if I need to look for a problem of some sort. I had kind of expected about 15 mpg or so.. The thermostat is new as is the air filter and muffler. When the muffler was installed they installer told me the rest of the exhaust looked great.
If this is the best the old truck will do I can live with it but I would like to know.
Thanks for any input!

I would be questioning the spark plugs and quite possibly the injectors in the TBI system. Other than that, 10-13 is about normal.

depends on where you live and what type of driving you are doing. with winter blend fuel and lots of city driving i would say that is pretty good especially if you live somewhere cold and let your truck warm up. if you do lots of straight highway driving you will most likely get better fuel mileage even with winter fuel. in the summer you should be able to average about 14-18mpg depending on your driving.

My 88 D250 360 4 speed with 4:10s the best it got was 14 mpg. But 10-12 was the more common.
As stated, your driving & it might not hurt to check the plugs & maybe run a can of seafoam through it, by adding it to the gas will clean up the injectors.
