That looks like the heat riser. Inside there is a butterfly valve attached to a bimetal spring. When the engine is cold the valve is closed and sends hot air up to the intake so the engine can warm up faster. There should be a counter weight on the outside and I would make sure that it moves freely. If its not opening up then maybe that's what is causing your backfiring? Welcome to RF.

i don't know if that is the heat riser or valve. there is an extra piece in there that i have no clue what it is. the valve should be in the manifold

that metal pipe above it looks like emissions relate but i have never seen it tied in like that. usually emissions stuff ties into the end of exhaust manifold.

Almost looks like someone had connected a turbo to it. Is the hole threaded? Maybe can just cap it.

A quick glance in google images shows me that AMC had manifolds for the 360's they used in that era that had a separate heat exchange valve like that. Could someone have bolted some AMC stuff on that truck?

It might not be original or even Chrysler but it looks like a heat riser valve to me. I think NYCruiser is right, maybe someone put a different exhaust setup on your truck. I worked on a '75 Jeep a few years ago and that is where the heat riser valve is located. Here's a pic of one from a 1984 Ford Bronco.

The one on the older Jeep looked different, it had a spring and counterweight on the outside and no vacuum fitting. Maybe someone left that piece in order to get everything to fit but removed the outer parts to make sure it stayed open all the time?
