You don't have a carb, you have fuel injection with a throttle body.....

If you are talking about your 2014 5.7 truck, if you're talking about the truck in your avatar picture I don't know what you have....

Shouldn't be any CPU on a carb in '84. MIGHT be a system for the smog controls, but not on the carb itself.

for some old timers that where likely around when these things where around you would think they would know a bit more about them.

the computer on the air cleaner is part of what is known as the lean burn ignition system. when it is working fine it is ok to leave but once you start having issues you are better off to just replace it. there is a couple routes to go but you really almost need to decide what you want do with the truck because not all of the options is really cheap. you could swap in a 4 pin ignition system or hei ignition setup but either option cost a bit mainly because you need to swap to a distributor with vacuum advance. i am also pretty sure either route alo requires a new carb which is why you may want to decide what your doing with the truck and if you are possibly wanting to swap in a v8 like a lot of people like to do. also am not sure if it would work with the /6 as it is or not but fi tech has a pretty good fuel injection system that might be worth looking into if you are going to have to replace the carb anyways.
