One of my trucks, a 89 w250 with the 318 is having some troubles.... It runs perfectly in park or neutral but when I put it in drive it makes it about 25 feet and Boggs out and dies... I've changed full pump out recently and new tps sensor and I checked for vacuum leaks and cleaned the throttle body up... I'm stumped on what's going on here... Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

It was replaced with the fuel pump less than a year ago by previous owner (I have paper work from the shop they got it done at) and I have pulled out the pump to make sure it works and as far as I can tell it functions. It's throttle body fuel injected.

when in park o neutral have you tried revving it up? If so what happens? If you can rev it fine in park then i wouldnt think its a fuel delivery problem. It could be a bad torque converter also. I would lean more toward the converter being bad.

Also could that even be the issue, from what I have ever seen if the converter goes bad you can't move at all and I can move but for only I'd say 25 to 60 feet tops, then it stalls and starts right up and goes another 25 to 60 feet and so on

And also this may help, if I get in the throttle quick I am able to break the back end lose and burn the tires on my garage floor for about 2 seconds before it stalls... This also makes me think to stray away from thinking it might being the torque converter

It almost sound to me that something is having up in the trans or the rear end
Will it coast freely in neutral?
It seems like the torque converter is fine but when you put it in gear it puts to much load on the motor and stalls it out

can you torque stall it without it stalling? (foot on the brake, throttle to the floor and wait for it to reach max rmp) or when it stalls is it under sevre load? like if you put it in gear and let it coast on its own will it go farther?
from what i can tell it could be a timing advance issue, timing isnt advancing or retarding properly when its under load
or possibly weak spark?

If I torque stall it will start to try to burn out and make a hand full of rotations the bogg out and die and it does seem to idle roll in drive with out problems until you give it throttle... I was wondering if it could be the timing but I don't have a timing light or any equipment to test it so I'm going to have to get a friend or something who has the equipment

hi everyone
new here at the forums just saw this and had to throw a hat into the ring
i had a dodge that did this exact same thing it turned out to be the distributor the thing would run fine at idle in park but when in gear, the dist wouldnt advance and die the truck would start right up just something else for you to check easier than changing a torque conveter

I am having the same trouble with my truck right at the moment. Is the truck cold when it is doing this or is it warm? when my truck is cold thats the only time it does it. try letting it warm up and driving it.

Does it always die? Can you feather the gas and keep it going? Could be your timing maybe.

I ended up finding out it was a timing issue
