Hey all I was curious what my normal operating temp should be for.my transmission. I have a 2016 2500 with the 6.7 Cummins and automatic. It is currently running 201-203 @ 65-75 degree outside temps. This seems high to me the engine is only running 190-195. And this is empty just highway cruising at 65. And it actually drops in temp when I slow down to city speeds. Is this common with these trucks the truck also only has 3800 miles on it could it still be getting broke in

Normal temps unloaded at 70-80 mph hwy speeds
Coolant 190-195°F
Trans 168-174°F
Oil 200-203°F

Of course if you increase the engine load then those numbers will go up, but should come back down once engine load returns to normal. Coolant will fluctuate the most due to the thermostat opening and closing. The thermostat starts to open at around 190° and is fully opened at around 200°F.

Per Cummins Quickserve Service Manual 6.7L Specs, standard coolant temps should be between 186-207°F, and maximum is 225°F. Maximum oil temp is 280°F.

Wait, I just reread your post, I thought you meant that the engine oil is at 201-203°F not the trans. If the trans is at that temp and you are not loaded, then something is not right. You may have some burnt up overdrive clutches that are slipping with that much heat.

Hopefully it is something smaller like the sending unit. Better take it in ASAP to have it checked out.
