I would guess just about any truck transmission could handle a 1,200 lb-ft capable engine if you never gave it enough fuel to make all 1,200 lb-ft. Same reason why people are running 450 hp/1000 lb-ft tunes in the 68RFE without breaking stuff. It is all how you drive them.
