Just as the title says. Was curious if it would really be worth it or not. I know some have gone from 3.73 to 4.56 but what about this change. I have calculated the rpms and not real sure if the juice is worth the squeeze. Thanks for any input.

Depends on what tires you have. Unless you're running 35-37's, or tow a lot, no need for 4.56's in my opinion.

Truck is stock as are tires and will stay that way. Just towing camper about 8-10 times a year with a couple 5-8 hours trips in there. I live in northern ohio. Travel to southern ohio with camper and other southern and eastern states. Camper weighs about 8500lbs.

Without bigger tires and more towing, probably not worth the expense. I tow approx the same weight trailer about the same number of times per year except I'm in the Rockies. Have never needed more than 4.10s but if someone gave me a couple of sets, I'd take 'em.

That's about the size travel trailer we just upgraded from and I think the 4.56 would have been perfect even though the 4.10s worked well. We tow all over the south east esp. In the smokey mountains and with the 4.10s I never felt under powered and could accelerate pretty much whenever I wanted and just about any grade. Avg mpg for me was around 9 in the mountains and 11 flat ground while towing

This info helps a lot thank you. I live in NW Ohio and we are pulling the jayco down to Anchor Down RV resort in Dainridge Tennessee in June. I really cant wait. If you guys are happy with your setups in the mountains I shouldnt have much to worry about then. Thanks guys.:favorites13:

Same. I'm in Utah, and I can't go any direction without towing over a pass. Never needed more than the 6.4 & 4.10s towing my 8k 33' trailer with the bed of the truck loaded down. Avg around 9mpg. I wish the trans were geared better, but it is what it is.

Tough call.... for the load you have I think I'd stick with it - unless you just have a few grand burning a hole in your pocket :)

I'm worse on each end and am surviving - 3.73s with an 11,000K 5th wheel. I've thought A LOT about jumping to the 4.56s but just haven't done it yet. I don't tow all that much and when I do the truck does good not great. It really would be a frivolous/optional thing if I did it. At your weight and considering you have the favorable 4.10s I'd probably just run with it.

Before my current 5th wheel I had a TT of the same weight you have and it pulled with ease in all conditions. I'm out west with plenty of mountains and elevation too.

As you may or may not have read here there's lots of complaining about gear spacing and shifting of the 66rfe paired with the 6.4 Hemi. Getting to know the truck and manually shifting when towing will serve you much better than a gear swap. In a nutshell, the tranny in this truck sucks but IMO about 80% of annoying characteristics go away if you just think for it.

If you have the extra cash and want to do it , then do it. you will be extremely happy. I don't tow that often, but I'm on 34"s with 373"s- I travel from sea lvl to 9k feet and I can say for certain this truck will have 35"s and 488"s one day. I am very familiar with gears and the effects it hey can have on mileage and drivability. I think the 6.4 with the mds mounted to this lovely tranny of ours will be perfect for me with 35"s and 4:88"s for the terrain I drive in... Now to just pull $2500 from somewhere ....

I'd say stick with the 4.10s if your keeping the stock tire size. If i ever change my 3.73s, I'm going to a 4.30 gear which i think would be perfect for what i do with my truck. Really the 3.73s are fine too for the lower weights i will be towing. Good luck.

This is my philosophy. After my bills are paid, charities have their money, and the amount I put in savings is in, the rest is blown like a line of cocaine in front of Lindsey Lohan.

OP, I say do it if you have the extra dough. I have spent more money on dumber things.

I think the same way you do. You only live once. I will most likely stay with what I have. Maybe I will just go diesel and really blow some money! Lol

This is my 2nd 3500 SRW 6.4 with 3:73's. Tow a 11k 5er. Would 4:10 be nice? Maybe?
No complaints here.

Here's a quick comparison that may be helpful. I have no idea why a 4.56 can't be optioned with that tall geared 66rfe.:
So take a 66RFE Ram with 4.10s and a 2017 6R100 4.30:
Ford 6R100-
6th gear at 65 mph running a 33" tire is turning 1964 rpm
Swap the Ford to a 3.73 and you're at 1703 rpm.
66RFE-
6th gear at 65 mph running a 33" tire is at 1709 rpm.
Swap the Ram to 4.56 and you're at 1901 rpm.

The tranny gearing makes a big difference between the trucks. It will take a 4.56 in the Ram to most closely match the Ford 4.30. The 4.30 is far and away the superior choice for the gasser. I've had both gear sets. I get better mpgs with my 4.30's for what I do. The only possible mpg hit is at 70+ unloaded on the freeway. It's hard for me to maintain 14 mpgs over 70mph. For my town and mixed driving I've picked up 10-15% from tank to tank over my last 3.73 truck.

This info looks familiar RainDesert. My alter ego is ncl on FTE. Thanks man. I would love to make this change just to try it but that's a lot of coin. I bet the truck would hold 5th gear a lot better with the 4.56 while towing. Anyone have a way to compare power numbers to the ground between 4.56 and 4.10?

It would hold 5th better while towing yes - It would also net better fuel mileage over 70 due to mds will activate and stay active easier.

Very good point. My experience is with the Ford only, which I can report loses mpg at 70. It does seem that the across the board average, the Hemi does do better than Ford in the mpg department.
