Is the 6.4 hemi derated with the megacab option?

First of all I want to say I am new to this forum and have never owned a dodge product before. I am in the market for a new 3/4 ton and have always been a gm fan. However I am not real impressed with the current gm offerings and recall issues. So honestly I am a little outside my comfort zone looking at fords and rams so I am reading everything I can on both. I am really leaning toward the ram. It is a beautiful truck, and the longhorn interior is the best looking from the big three in my opinion. I picked up a brochure from one of the local dealers for the 2014 models and noticed at the bottom of the page covering the three engines that the 6.4 is rated at I think it was 360hp with the megacab and 410 with the regular and crew cab trucks. This does not make A lot of sense to me especially when there are no such notes under the 5.7 hemi. Am I the only one that noticed this or am I not comprehending what the brochure is stating

I highly doubt the megacab would have different performance numbers. Sounds more like an error in the brochure to me.

Sounds like an error, or you saw the 350hp or 370hp diesel option and got it mixed up

Yes the 6.4 is detuned on the 3500 mega cab, don't ask me why that's just what they do for some reason. The 2500 mega can is normal, it only affects the 1 ton.

have you driven one yet?? i have a 6.4 2500 mega on 20's.. i ******* love it.. only thing i dislike is it has 373,s.. i wish it had 410,s to take more advantage of the "mds" technology.. but it still pulls fine. and at 8k back of msrp... how can you not like it?..

I believe hp/tq are just rated with a different method once you reach a certain weight. The chassis cabs are the same way. It's like this with the 6.2 in the Ford chassis cabs as well.

ya something about different weights use different types of dyno's to measure hp/tq

I was aware of the ford rating system. I think they just take the hp readings at a different rpm. However I have not found any info on what rpm the ram is making it's power so I was not sure what was going on there. I have not had the chance to test drive the 6.4 as of yet. The only ram dealer in town had one gasser and it was the 5.7. I will admit it impressed the hell out of me. Looking forward to driving the 6.4. Does anyone know how the cylinder deactivation works on these engines?

As a long time ford and gm owner in 2004 I decided to try a Dodge ram 1500. Fantastic vehicle and great for towing with the 5.7 hemi. In 2009 when Chrysler was going through bad times they offered the trucks with a lifetime drivetrain warranty so I bought a new 1500 with 5.7 hemi. Best vehicle I ever owned. Just this month my towing needs increased so I bought the 2014 Laramie with the 6.4 hemi. I hope it turns out to be as good as my previous two rams. All vehicles now a days are excellent. Price and reliability dictate which brand I purchase. As with the two previous rams I feel I get a lot more for my money than ford and gm. Compare features, HP, and torque and I believe ram is the way to go. I cant explain the de-rating of HP on the 3500 but my heavy duty 2500 with the 6.4 can tow almost 13000 lbs. with a payload of 4400 lbs. Covers anything I would ever do with the truck.

Your 2500 with the 6.4 would have to weigh 5600 lbs to have a payload of 4400. My crew cab big horn weighs 7140 with me in it, so roughly 2800 lb payload. There's a sticker in the door jam that shows your max payload. The one with the tire pressures.

I think your # my be off. My 3500 srw 6.4 CC has a payload of 4200, cant see a 2500 having more. But ive been known to be wrong a time or two....

The truck I am replacing is a 97 gmc with the 350 250hp and 330 ft/lbs it currently has 327000 miles( I keep things a long time lol). Any way the heaviest thing I pull is a 4020 john deere I am guessing around 12000lbs with the plow or bushhog and my old truck pulls it just fine. It does not get up and go like stink by any means but I can get on the interstate with no problems keeping up with traffic. Here in southwest louisiana it's pretty flat. I think the 5.7 will be plenty but I certainly wouldn't mind the extra power of a 6.4

Your GVWR is also 10,000 lbs with the 6.4 and only 9000 lbs with the 5.7. So you get an extra 1000 lbs of payload. The 6.4 should get slightly better fuel mileage as well, at least that's what dodge says. The 5.7 does not have MDS in the 2500. The 5.7 also recommends 89 octane where the 6.4 only needs 87 due to a lower compression ratio.

It's a completely different engine than the SRT 6.4L. It was built from the ground up specifically for a truck.

there are just some things that ChryDoFiRam does that we will never understand.

How it makes sense to detune a truck with a larger and by all accounts heavier cab is beyond me. I would think you'd want to go the other way.

I remember reading somewhere that it's not really detuned, it just has a lower red line, thus not reaching the higher HP numbers at a higher RPM. If this is the case, you'd never notice a difference in power unless you're winding it all the way up.

Perhaps you will never understand. But for the rest of us, the explanation provided by "ChryDoFiRam" was clear: the bigger, heavier trucks are typically used in commercial/work environments (as opposed to 1500s, which people buy because they want a big car) so they detune them for durability.

Same reason the 6.4 makes sustantially less power in the RAM vs. the Challenger.
