I was just wondering what engine coolant temps everyone is seeing from their 6.4 Hemis in a normal (non-towing) situation. Do they ever reach 220 degrees? What temps do your fans kick on? Just curious what the norm is, and if my truck falls in the same range. Thanks.

Non-Towing mine goes between 185 & 205. Today I towed About 8,000lbs. And I seen 230 engine temp and 228 transmission temp. But that was going up and down a 9% grade for about 50 miles each way.

Mine hangs around 185 to 215 or so at max. Seems like the electric fan kicks on at around 200-205. I've got a 2500 MC Limited 6.4.

I think the warmest mine got was 220. The tranny got to 170. This was pulling my 38' toy hauler on mostly flat and some small hills. I was taking it nice and easy

Unloaded, mine is almost always 200 engine and 174 transmission. Towing, I have seen as high as 230 engine(lots of grades around here). Never seen the transmission over 176. My fan kicks on about 215, and doesn't turn off until I have been under 210 for a good while.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I appreciate it. I can take your input and give it to the service manager tomorrow and tell him that mine seems to be running hotter than the norm. He tried to tell me that 220 degrees without a load wasn't anything to worry about, and that was with weather in the 50's. I know once I throw a trailer on behind and pull any grade it'll overheat. Can you guys hear the clutch fan and electric fan when they kick on at all?

I can easily hear the electric fan while idling at lights. Haven't been hot enough to make the clutch kick in... I've only heard it on a couple cold starts. And that's with and without towing my work trailer. I'll be making a trek up IKE with it pulling around 7k the first weekend in July. I'll report back then. I have screenshots of my gauge cluster with most of the fluctuation of that helps...

Related question. At what temp while towing or otherwise should I be concerned with the 6.4 overheating. Some have posted temps of 230* while towing and with my limited experience on these newer engines I would have thought 230* would be in the "red" already.

Oh heck yes! I hit engine temps at 242, coolant in the mid 220s and tranny in the low 190's pulling a horse trailer back over the Wind River Mtn's at an elevation of 8500 feet. Cannot miss it when it comes on.

I know by experience that my gauge stays in the center until over 220 degrees, and then it starts to climb above half. At 235 it's at the 3/4 mark on the temp gauge, and 250 is in the red with an audible alarm and "engine temp hot on evic display. I couldn't hear any fans come on, I guess that's why my truck is still at the dealership and I've been driving a loaner, they're trying to figure it out I guess. Unless it's not actually getting that hot, and it's just a bad temp sender or gauge cluster bad.

Does anyone happen to know when the thermostat opens? The service manager told me this morning that the Dodge tech line says the thermostat opens at 221 degrees which seems awful high to me!

Maybe a 210 thermostat is in order.

Mine while towing got to 220. Only during one climb. Otherwise 195 to 213. Oil temp at 225 and trams at 167 to 170.

the ambient temperature will have a lot to do with it. some may run cooler in other areas of the country while others may run hotter. Some peoples definition of a hill can be rather mild to others definition. After some seat time in your truck u know what is acceptable and what is not.

My temps while towing are usually 220-238 for coolant, and 170-176 transmission. On some pretty decent grades I've seen my trans tenp get to 187 and that's when I start to hear some kind of hum under acceleration. Once the temps come down a little it goes away. Is that the clutch fan making that noise?
