I ordered a 2014 Mega Cab with the 6.4 liter. Earlier this week I had access to the 2014 Ram sales brochure. On p.44 listing the 2500 / 3500 standard and optional equipment per model, the 6.4 liter is shown with the advertised h.p. (410) and torque (429) followed by "(367 hp Mega Cab)". That is less horse power than the standard 5.7?

Can someone explain this to me and why there would be a 43 hp reduction on a Mega Cab?

Maybe to answer my own question, just read another brochure that I downloaded that states the 6.4 HP is only lowered on the 3500. I ordered a 2500, but still find it odd that it's lowered on a 3500.

On Ram chassis cabs with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds, the 6.4 was rated at 367 hp at 4,600 rpm at launch, a lower rating than the 5.7 in cars or light-duty trucks — the emphasis is on durability and heavy-load driveability.

I know that the 5.7 hemi 2500 is detune than the 5.7 hemi 1500 and I'm like why is that.

TBD - 6.4??
Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but my understanding is that the engines are not "detuned" per say, but not rated as highly due to EPA.

my understanding was vehicles over a certain GVWR had to pass a drive by sound test with the EPA. the larger vehicles, 1 tons and i believe the Megacabs also fall in this category, have to be below a set DB rating.

To meet this DB rating, the engines must be ran at a lower RPM than peak power to not exceed the DB allowed. This means the engines are rated at the max power they can make within the DB allowed.

Read where chevy just increased the rated numbers on its 3500 6.0l vortex because of increased sound insulation meaning they could run the engine to max power and still meet the EPA DB levels.

my guess is that the numbers listed for the 6.4 where it appears to be "detuned" actually mean that's the max power the engine will make and not exceed the DB. The engines truly make the same power as the other 6.4 engines, they just don't list that as the rated numbers.

basically, my understanding is that it they added some more sound deadening material to the engine bay, they would rate the larger 6.4's (1 ton and mega cabs) at the same higher hp/tq numbers.

open for spears if this isn't correct.....

Hmmm, interesting so why would they drop the tow and payload rating when I bought my 2500 it was rated for 11,400 lbs and I went to the site again and seen that it was rated 11,050 unless I'm reading it wrong?
