Has anyone deleted the resonator by themselves? I see that you can purchase a 4" rear tailpipe from a Cummins but I just wonder if that would work. I'd buy an adapter to go from the stock 3.5" to 4" but I wonder if the bends are the same. Anyone attempt this yet?

So why the resonator delete? I would put that exit pipe at a good angle like the Chevy diesels so that way u are not listening to a ton of drone if u tow something. Also u may want to just leave the resonator and delete the muffler, the muffler has a butterfly valve in it.. you would benefit more from the removal of that.

I deleted mine out of curiosity and it gave it a very slightly deeper tone and didn't notice any drone while driving. Plus I didn't like seeing that garbage can under the truck. I've since added the Mufflex DOD250035 and love it. No noticeable drone while driving or towing. I use tow/haul while driving (I think I get the best mpg that way) to keep mds off.

I just cut it off myself so it dumps right after the rear axle. the sound gets a bit deeper, but for me its just perfect. Im not noticing much drone at all either

Yeah, the look is ridiculous. I'd like to find out if I can swap in a tailpipe section from a Cummins.

I wouldn't see why not. The angles look to be about the same. Other than needing a adapter to go to 4".

So don't buy the Cummins tailpipe because it has the wrong bends. It wasn't close. I ended up Sawzalling it off just before the resonator and not the exhaust is dumped. It sounds deeper and a bit more aggressive

Now just swap out that muffler to remove that butterfly valve. If you are not looking for a loud exhaust note then look into a magnaflow 22 or 24 inch muffler, or brand your preferred brand of choice.

^^^yep, did that already. I've got a mufflex / Magnaflow muffler. I'm trying to add a pic but it keeps closing out the page.

So it's not much louder getting rid of the resonator?

Can anyone explain to me what the resonator is for? Does it assist the muffler? It used to be you had a muffler & that was it! Now with all the emissions you got your cat, muffler, & resonator.
One would like to think they ran out of room with they way they stuck it in there. But it is a HD truck ya can't tell me they couldn't have found a more attractive way to go out the back of this truck. The whole tailpipe assembly is ridiculous looking! I will be cutting mine off before the engine cools off from the dealership! :naughty:

It's designed to help keep the amount of drone from the exhaust (mainly from mds) to a minimum

I believe it's to maintain a constant back pressure when the mds kicks in

I would think deleting that would have a negative affect on the tuning. Maybe that's why some of these guys are not getting any benefit from the MDS.

Could be. I think having mds in a 3/4 ton is useless. I drive with tow haul on all the time. Only time I shut it off is if I'm driving over 65+, which is rare. Truck feels more responsive in tow haul mode.

I'm the opposite. I use my MDS all the time and don't feel it's useless. I get better empty highway mileage than our lead guitar players 6.2 Ferd, and way better than my bro-in-laws 2012 chevy 6.0 ever did. He traded that in on a Dirtymax because the mileage was about 12. Get about the same as my father in laws 2012 ecoboost max tow. He isn't very impressed with the Eco, but likes the boost.

The flapper's function in the muffleris more than likely similar to the performance mufflers with a flapper. Noise reduction. At idle and part throttle the flap is closed, causing the exhaust to take a longer path to exit the muffler, reducing volume when maximum performance is not needed. Waith more throttle the flapper is forced open by exhaust pressure giving the exhaust a less restrictive exit, freeing up some power at the expense of more noise.

The resonator is for mds drone.
