ok, for those that have had the v10 ram and now the 6.4 hemi,

1)how do they compare?
2)how do they differ?

Discuss!

FWIW I liked the 98 2500 V10 my father had. It pulled his 28.5' 5er no problem. Well, other than it didn't pass a gas station. He had a Jet chip and Gibson cat back.

I still have a week and a half before I take delivery of my 6.4l, but I quizzed my father about his V10 Ram. He had a silver 98 2500 extended cab long box. At the time he pulled a 28.5' Cherokee 5er. We drug it from montana to Missouri through the black hills, stopping at Mt. Rushmore along the way. he liked the v10, said it pulled like crazy. Thought it pulled as well as his 98.5 24v, but differently.

From what I have seen on here the 6.4 will out pull the old big blocks and get better mileage doing it. It is definitely not a cummins but if you were happy with the v10 you will definitely be happy with the 6.4.

I test drove a '95 Ram V10 and a '95 F250 Powerstroke back in '95. Both felt exactly the same on my seat of the pants acceleration test. I only opted for the Powerstroke because I felt the V10 might be hard to get parts.

Now realize the Powerstroke had 210 horsepower and 420 torque.
The V10 had around 310 hp and 450 torque.
The 6.4L has 410 hp and 429 torque. So the ability to pull the load from a stop is going to be very similar between them. The ability to keep the load going at 70+ mph is going to be a lot more apparent with the 6.4L.

Back in the old days, it was said that if HP=Displacement, you had a good engine. A 392 c.i. engine with 410 HP exceeds that line of thinking. IMHO.

I think even though they are both gas they will pull different. The V10 red lined at like 4500 and put it's peak torque to the ground at 1800 rpm

I'm sure it isn't that people don't care, it is more not too many people can make your comparison.

^^^ This ^^^

I've owned a 318, a 360, a 345 & a 392 but never the V10 so I just can't offer an opinion or a real world comparison.

With respects to the 392 compared to the other Dodge engines I have owned, the 6.4L pulls harder...much harder.

I own an 8L and it does a good job. Not getting what your dad did pulling a trailer but about the same empty.
With the lack of aftermarket and factory support for the 8L the 6.4 would have to be my choice.

It's been a while since he had it. But it did have a Jet chip and Gibson exhaust. He traded it for a 24v thinking it would be better. Stock he didn't think the 24v pulled any better, and being DRW he only got about 15-16mpg empty and 10-11 pulling. he was pretty disappointed.

Never driven a 8L V10, but I would have liked to. I bet that thing was a pulling SOB with its with 450 lb-ft at just 2,400 rpm. Although as with anything, gearing and torque multiplication makes a big difference. I have driven a lot of trucks that put some good numbers engine wise, but the transmission put behind it made all that torque a moot point. Adversely, I have seen a good transmission make up for the torque shortcomings of an engine which is the case for the Ford 6.2L.

The 6.4 pulls far better than my v10 did. I believe the biggest difference being in the trans. Both pulled decent but when the v10 had to downshift it was a big gap.

I can't compare because I've never driven the 6.4. I have driven most of the different engine equipped up to 2013 Dodges. My 1995 V10 was SWEET. But it had 3.55 gearing. My 2012 5.7 has 3.92 and is pretty sweet too, but I haven't towed with it yet. I realize it's 1/2 ton not HD3/4 ton. But if the 6.4 is just a bigger version of the 5.7 I'd think it would be a good replacement for a V10.
