I did my first oil change (1st one done by dealer).

I go the M1 113 which all sites said was the proper size for my 6.4L 2500.

I compared it to the one installed by the dealer - it was much smaller - it fit but was smaller.

Mobil1 Extended Performance Oil Filter M1-113: Advance Auto Parts

This is the larger Mopar filter I took off my truck. Amazon says it does not fit my truck but this is what the dealer put in and I did not have any problems.

https://www.amazon.com/Mopar-MOPAR-0.../dp/B01FKPJ12W

If you look at the top view; you can tell that the above filter is larger - wider and longer then the M1 113. The canister and gasket on the M1 are about the same size but on the Mopar one the canister is larger then the gasket.

Anyone think there will be a problem using the M1 113? I'm towing in the southwest and will be going long distances in remote areas so I'm concerned.

I sent an email to the seller to confirm that the larger filter is OK and if it is I will be using it in the future.

OK - I got an answer from the Amazon seller - The larger filter will screw on. But the smaller one is the recommended filter. The larger one was not recommended so as to not touch a radiator hose. But there is enough room there that the larger filter will not touch the hose.

Sounds like the same thing they said about the larger filter on the 5.7 will hit the electric steering rack...

FWIW, I am running a FL-820 size filter on my 6.4 that is about 3.5" in diameter. There is at least 3/8" clearance between the filter and the coolant hose.

I think your M1-113 is smaller in diameter at about 3" and probably would fit fine. For what ever reason, they spec'd the same smaller filter for our engine as the 5.7 because of their electric steering issues but we do not have that problem. Only limitations is a coolant hose going to big on diameter and too far in length and we run into the fan and shroud.

I'm using the Wix version of the larger filter. Bunch left over from my 5.7 1500. Fits fine with no interference on my 6.4 2500.

Thanks. I think I have filter envy. The recommended filter looks really small to me.

Holy smokes that filter is buried in the 1500 5.7's. I really don't think you could get a bigger one in there, as you can barely get the small one in.

Before they buried it, they all took the mopar 899's I think. On the 2500/3500 6.4's I bet the 899 size filters would probably fit. May have to see what's up next time as I still have a few of those laying around...

A bigger filter has to be better right? :)

You can get one in there it's just doesn't make for an easy removal/install. My truck is a 13 with the electric steering but it was manufactured in Dec of 2012 and came through with the larger filter from the factory.

I'm not an expert on filters but when I looked inside the two filters - larger vs recommended - the larger one seemed better constructed.

don't know if there's minor changes to 2017s but my 2015 6.4 has no problems whatsoever.
