low should only be engaged while stopped. as far as 4x4 hi.. I have always ran my vehicles as fast as I felt comfortable with the given weather conditions. I have set my cruise @ 80 in high before..it was 2 am .. 4 lanes.. about 4 degress.. and 2 feet of light fluffy powder and not a sole in sight for the next 50 miles. some people wi say that anything over 35 or 55 in 4 high is bad for the vehicle or is just not safe. will hauling ass in 4 high hurt your truck, nope. but remember this... once u lose control in a 4x4 or all wheel drive vehicle.. getting it to come back is that much harder.

Pretty much what he said, the only thing I've ever seen in regards to 4x4 High, was to shift the tcase under 55mph, and not under throttle. Many a times I've cruised the roads around here, when snowy at 60mph in 4H.

Hi Hemi1282,

+1 to shift into 4 lock (4hi for the 4auto trucks) under 55 mph and while not under hard acceleration.
4LO is engage at less than 3 mph and with transmission in neutral.
Be careful about using either on dry blacktop if it starts bucking take it out of 4WD. There is no slip in these trucks when they are in 4WD and the bucking is the two axles trying to rotate at different speeds.
Enjoy,

Like said above as fast as you want in 4 hi or 4 lock (same thing). Mine is different because I have the manual shift transfer case, but to go in and out of 4 low i need to move just a little, so I park on a hill and shift into neutral in both the transmission and transfer case and then let my foot off the brake just a little bit and it goes right in. Pretty much the same thing coming out. I'm sure the internals are the same for the two transfer cases so try moving just a little bit) under 3 mph or it won't even attempt the shift) and it should go right in.

I agree with loveracing1988. Drive as fast as you want in 4 HI. 1/4 miler diesel trucks run in 4 HI all the way to the finish line. 4 LO you aren't going to be going very fast anyway.

That said, why run 80 mph in 4x4 on the highway? I'll click it in and out based on the road conditions, but I'll be that guy just minding my own at no more than 55 mpg in 4x4 - but that is just MY preference. Plus 55 mph is about as fast I want to go when I hit the ditch!
