Hey guys/gals i'm new to the forum, but considering moving up from a half ton to a pre-owned 2500 Laramie 6.4L 4x4 Crew. The truck has under 25K miles and a build date of 11/2013. Price is right around $40K. Do you see any issues I might run into? Does that sound like a decent price to pay for a lightly used one?

Was gonna go the diesel route, but don't want the extra costs involved. Currently tow a travel trailer under 7000 lbs loaded and in the future the most I would ever tow is a 10-11K lbs 5th wheel. And the mileage sure can't get much worse than my current 1/2 ton gasser @ 12-13 city/15-16 highway...7-9 towing :(.

I appreciate any feedback you can provide.

That sounds steep to me. I bought my 2014 RAM 2500 CTD 4x4 CC BigHorn brand new for like $47k

It has the 20" wheels, Nav system, heated/cooled power leather seats, spray in bedliner, sidesteps, push button-remote start, power fold-in mirrors, 3120 lb payload, 4.10 gears, 10K GVWR, halogen headlights and a few more options i'm sure im forgetting.

Does that sound more reasonable? It stickered for $56K. I thought $40K was pretty good.

In my area you can't find the 4.10 option, and most similarly equipped 2015's won't get lower than $45K. I've seen some well equipped Bighorn's at $42K (with incentives), but my budget is limited at $40K. The CTD's jump up over $45 quickly, even in the SLT/Bighorn trim.

Mine stickered at $56,070. I'm just saying it seems high for a used gasser.

Here are my options so you can see and decide for yourself. The CTD option alone is $8k. All I'm saying is I got mine new for $7k more

My 2014 Bighorn 6.4L 2500 stickered for $52K, got it as a leftover this last March for $38K.

I'm thinking the $40K used is a very heavy number.

jadocs,
No i appreciate it. And seeing the sticker helps. I get what your saying $7K doesn't sound too far apart especially new vs used, but for me its a lot and makes a huge difference in the payments.

My neighbor just bought a used '14 SLT with the 6.7 CTD & 14K miles for $40K. Its pretty basic so this loaded 6.4L with just a few more miles seemed great comparatively. I did find a new '15 Bighorn Blackout 6.4L for $43K w/Nav and a 6.7 CTD w/no Nav for same, but even that puts me beyond my payment limit.

I guess I'm more or less wondering about issues buying a 6.4L with relatively low mileage. I know a diesel with 20K miles isn't even close to broke in, but what about a 6.4L? And will 3 yrs/80K miles left on the powertrain be enough? I plan to have this truck 6-7 yrs and only drive 13-15K miles per year (currently less than 3K of that towing).

Maddog,
That's a stellar deal. Was your $38K price before or after dealer fees (processing/doc/freight)?

The $40K for this one is OTD and then tax. I found a new one listed at $41,700, but then the dealer wants another $1800 in fees even before tax. I also lose some barganing power because of a trade.

Another issue might be my location, close to VA/DC so prices are sometimes inflated around here. Too many silver spoons and 24kt gold monogrammed shirts...and I'm not in that crowd :).

Is it true that you have to pay an annual tax on the value of your vehicle over there? I heard that, but could not fathom it being true since I could not think of one person that would put up with such nonsense.

In VA you do pay an annual tax on everything you own. I'm across the rivers in the socialist state of MD where the @$$hat liberals haven't figured out how to screw that idea up yet like the rest of their plans.

I hear you about the monthly payment. I guess based on what I got my truck for (to include all the options listed above), I would expect the one your looking at to probably be around $35-36k used. Certainly not within a few thousand of a similarly equipped new CTD. I am also in VA. Have you thought about extending your search outside your immediate area?

Hi All,

"Is it true that you have to pay an annual tax on the value of your vehicle over there? I heard that, but could not fathom it being true since I could not think of one person that would put up with such nonsense."

Same here in the Con state CT. The taxes in this state are absolutely horrendous. I don't own my home I am simply renting it from the state for about $3000 a year plus another $1100 for my 2013 truck and my wife's 2014 Avenger. Plus sales tax, plus income tax. This is EXACTLY why I call CT the Con state because "The State" cons you out of all your money. BTW this is for an 1100 sq. ft. house.

My 14 stickers for 54k got it out the door for 39k. The kicker for me buying new over used was the loan interest rates.. 1.9% on 39k was cheaper than 6% on 35k 2010 6.7. ctd. Best of luck.

After looking all over the net within 200 miles and hearing from all you guys I'm thinking the $40K with no other fees but tax/tags/title isn't so bad. Especially for a truck in a color combo I really like with every option except a moonroof and Ram Box. I don't think 20K miles is bad for 1.5 years of ownership. I drive 12K/yr so thats not far off how I use mine which is 3 yrs old in July and has 37K.

I can get a 3% interest rate for up to 84 months if needed. With zero to put down except the overage on my trade I'm kinda limited with anything more expensive. This truck is a good distance from me too and the closest to my needs in my price range. I may try wheeling and dealing on another new Bighorn model with a few less options, but their best price is already $3000 higher to start.

Any one had any mechanical issues with their 6.4's?

Any regrets not getting the CTD?

I dont have many miles but so far its working fine.

And no, I have no regrets going back to a gasser. I bought this thing knowing the limitations and differences between the 6.4 & 6.7 and dont expect the gasser to perform the same.

I'm going to go look at a '15 Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi Blackout Bighorn with 4.10 gears and a few other goodies. I'm not sure I can get the deal I need, but figured for only $1600 more than the used '14 I first posted about why not try. Only real difference between the two is color and no leather, oh and 20K miles. Hoping it works out because I'd prefer to break mine in myself.
