So I currently drive a 94 f150 with 5spd and 302- I have 219k on it and its getting tired. I pull a 18' customweld river sled/jet boat and do a lot of hunting n fishing trips. I would love a cummins, but its out of my price range:(. So was starting to look at Ram 2500's with the Hemi, but have heard they get terrible mpg. So do I get the 2500 with a 5.7 hemi or maybe a 1500 with the 3.0 diesel. Just looking for opinions out there. Thanks

Yeah. Just get an older cummins. Either a 3rd gen or a 2nd gen will pull that trailer and get you anywhere.

IMO those 94-96 F150's were some of the best trucks made, I still wouldn't mind having one around to beat and use my Ram just as my dd. Don't care for the TTB, but everything else is just great. What is the weight you pull and the budget? What cab figuration and bed length, 4x4? I would look hard at a used Cummins as opposed to a new truck for your use. Especially if you can find a stick, it will be cheaper and will last longer.

Go with an older Cummins! The Hemi is powerful, but you just can't beat a Cummins.

I have a 2012 2500 4x4 with the hemi and I get about 13.5 to 15 city and 16 highway, pretty good for a heavy duty pickup with 4x4. I occasionally pull a 8000 lb fifth wheel and get about 10 when I pull it. Real happy with mine. I bought it a year old with 8000 miles on it for $30k

Thanks Hvyduty Hemi, for letting me know what u get for mileage thats not bad at all. I have thought about a used Cummins- I love the 03-06 body style but around southern Orgeon one with 150-200k miles is still $25k-35k. If I could find one for around 20k I would probably go that route, but I can get a brand new hemi 2500 for $31,000.

So was starting to look at Ram 2500's with the Hemi, but have heard they get terrible mpg.

Compared to what? A compact car?

Funny, this keeps popping up lately. And again, I keep posting that I only see a 3 mpg improvement in my '07 1500 QC 4x4 5.7L with Tow Package.

I was out 'wheeling to a Bonfire get together out in the sticks last night and noticed I was averaging 14 this tank, while crawling up a rocky stream bed.

It was the least of my concerns, as the truck is just that good everywhere else. ...and it is a full size, fully capable truck.

Regardless, Welcome aboard. Sounds like you would be happy with a 1500 with the Tow Package 3.92's... a 18' Jet isn't that heavy, even in hills at altitude in the back country.

It'll be hard to walk away from you're old friend in that small block Ford. But, once you take that step, the new technology, comforts and efficiency will have that truck long gone in your memories in no time.

Keep poking around in here... you'll find the combo that is right for you in no time.

You don't need a Cummins for a 18' boat. Come on now people!

My truck gets truck MPGs, they aren't good, and they certainly aren't in the 20s.
*shrug* I bought it knowing this and would very likely do it again.

Yeah, I'm with WhiteExpress on this one I know going into what I was getting before I bought my 2014 2500 hemi and love it. I had over size tires on my 2011 1500 ram and was getting about 13 city and about 18 highway. Well with the setup I have now I don't get too much less than what I was getting with my 2011.

Jeeze Greg, I didn't know you were a member of the fairly elusive [exclusive?] 2500 "gasser" club around here!

I like you even more now.

:waytogo:

Better than that, I sold my Dad on one too. We're getting his '14 6.4 Crew Cab 4x 2500 tomorrow (hopefully)

My 14 Megacab 6.4L is getting the exact same mileage as co-worker's 11 QCSB Cummins. The EPA has ruined diesel for pickups.

Unless they are unleashed with mods and a tuner....I've pulled many a trailer over Grants Pass, Tahoe, the Wasatch and Rockies with both gas and diesel...The diesel tows easier every time and has power to spare. ..The gasser always kicking down gears to make long grades. .

To the OP you could prolly get a gen3 6.7 for less than your 31k new truck.

My gen3 seemed better offroad than my gen4, but the gen4 has a much nicer feel inside. Great for long trips...

Good luck
