I get this random popping sometimes when I go from park to reverse and actually back up. It usually happens when I am backing down an incline. And more so when I have weight in the back. It feels like it is coming from the rear end and I haven't opened it to check.
Any ideas on what to look for?

Is it more of a pop or a clunk? I'd look at the u-joints first and work my way back to the axle, including the hubs. Also, I'd give the suspension a good once-over, especially at the shock mounts and coil contact points.

Sounds like drive shaft torque.
Resting , on an incline, the going into reverse, the drive shaft and u joints are tweaked. Not unlike a steering wheel that has been turned sharply , into a tight parking spot. When you try to leave, the steering needs to have the torque released.

nothing ot worry about.
check u joints, to be safe but doubt ig you find any play.
