Went on a trip to Florida from Michigan towing 7-8k gooseneck. Travelled down 75 primarily going through mountains in Kentucky and Tennessee. The 6.4 w/ 3.73 was strong but mileage wasn't so great. The gauge showed 6.5-7.5 and my average at the end of the round trip was about 7.2. Normal? This was not hand calculated.

I tow 8000 lb. TT with another 1000 lbs. in the bed. Through all types of terrain and high mountains passes my hand calculated MPG is 9.1 This is an average over 20,000 miles of towing. I never exceed 65MPH. Same 6.4 and 3.73's.

Faster you go, the worse the MPG added to mtn terrain.

I see it now.

So you had a 7 - 8K gooseneck hooked, running anywhere between 55 - 75, and the avg mileage was from the truck's computer at 7.2 mpg; right?

The truck's computer is notorious for not being accurate. So hand calculation is best. I bet you did better than the computer results.

7 - 8K is not near the max you can tow with your truck but it's a known fact that gassers don't do as well as a diesel can in the MPG department when towing. But I think the computer results are low.

Lastly, if you can keep it at 55 - 60 your mileage will definitely improve.

I tow a 5'vr with a loaded weight right at 9500 - 9750 pounds with my 6.4L and 3.73 gears. I let the transmission, in tow/haul, manage the gears most of the time. It's not a flat tow, either. It seems it don't matter which direction I go, I've always got some mountain range in the way.

Anyway...I'm normally at 8.4 - 8.7 towing and I generally set the cruise at 60 mph on the freeway. If I could tow 500 miles on totally flat or low elevation change rolling country I'm pretty sure I'd do better.

My 6.4 3.73 towing 11-12k returned 7.5-8.5 in the badlands, foothills and mountains. I have seen in the 5's with strong cross/head winds. 11s with tail wind. But I towed at 60-65, usually 62.

How many miles do you have on your truck. The Hemi's seem to get a lot better mileage after they have about 15-20k on them.

That seems a bit low but not terrible. Speed REALLY makes these trucks drop MPGs in a hurry, whether towing or not. So, if you spent much time north of 65-70ish I'm not surprised.

I would say I was often in that range through the 2000 mile round trip.

This!

Especially if what you are towing has a lot of wind resistance. There could be as much as a 3-4 mpg difference versus towing an 8k trailer with little wind resistance versus towing an 8k trailer with a lot of wind resistance.

And most st (trailer) tires are only rated for 65 mph.

I tow 7000-7500lbs in the form of a horse trailer, standard bumper hitch not a goose. Trailer has a slant nose and the truck has a cap on it with 35" tires and no drivetrain mods with 3.73s.

I get 9.5-11mpg at 65mph towing flat to hilly terrain over the course of a couple hundred miles. I have another town up to Maine this weekend with a single horse so I figure 1100lbs lighter......should be solid 10-11mpg.

Your not to far off from what I have gotten 6.4 3.73, I towed about 9500lbs from WV to FL generally taking it easy averaged about 8.5, in WV it was down around 6.5 but that was through the 3000FT mountainous southern part of my route. I think I had about 10K on it at that time as well. Later on empty I have averaged over 19 EVIC FL to WV and back.
