Guys,

I am planning to buy a 2014 Ram sport edition i saw on kijjiji. It has a v8 hemi engine with axle ratio 3.92 with 102k kilometers. I talked to the guy and he mentioned that major maintenance is done by Dodge but he did the regular oil changes to save money. We both agreed to take the vehicle for an inspection and then decide to buy.

1.Is there any specific thing i should look for?
2.Would dodge do the inspection for the buyer and tell me what needs to be done etc (or) a private mechanic is much better?
3. He also mentioned the gas mileage is 13/100kms in city and 10/100 kms in highway. I am hesitant to believe that with a v8 engine. Do you guys get the same mileage?
4. If there is any other inspection which should be done before deciding to buy?

I dont want to buy a truck and then endup paying much more $$$'s in fixing, which the previous owner did not tell me.

Please let me know.
Luis

Tell the guy you want a long test drive and test the mileage yourself, old style fill to top drive and refill. 50 miles should do. I wouldn't ever believe what someone says when trying to sell their car, so save type writer energy when posting that. If you got receipts, great. What is the price he wants and the mileage in miles, and what are your options as far as buying new? Where are you located? The gas mileage will always be better highway versus city. 15ish is possible with 8 speed city, better on highway. Do you have the 8 speed? That would be a deal killer imo if you didn't.

My ram with 3.21 gears 4x4 full crew with Level and Nitto G2 tires, I average 20-21mpg so 14 l/km is about right for my highway. City though I drop about 3mpg or 16-17 l/km

My 2014 Sport 8spd and 3:91 gears. I get around 14-15 L/100 in the city and 11/100 on the hi-way. The other day while towing a double wide skidoo trailer loaded with 20 sidewalk blocks, I was getting 13 l/100 on the hi-way. I'm running stock 20" goodyear RSA's.

Burla,

Thanks for the reply. Yes it has 8 speed, am located in Calgary, Canada and i am not towing anything. Is just for fun, i want to drive a dodge. I don't think his axle ratio is 3.91 , it must be 3.21 for him to get this mileage. The vehicle has 102k kilometers on it which is 63.5k miles. He says he just did oil change by himself and all others are done by dodge. I called Dodge an they mentioned they can do a 84 pt inspection for $100, is this sufficient to buy the truck (or)do i need more inspection?

Price is $29K Canadian which is almost $24k USD.

That mileage is realistic. My 2015 with 3.21 gears gets in the 10s L/100 on the highway. I've averaged 9.6 a few trips if the wind is in my favour. In the city yes 13-14 L/100. I'm real happy with the mileage I get. And that's just a 6 speed.

Re: Tom

So you mean with the 8 speed, it should give more mileage.

Since when did Ram go to 3.91 gears ??

My 2012 has 3.92s

I also have the 6 spd trans and 4x4, but I still get 20+ on the highway...city, well, as little as I drive it, it's around 13 or so. Towing ranges from 10-14, depending on what it is (boat or camper).

Also, verify the year...your post title says 2015, but in the post you say 2014....maybe it was a typo ? but it does affect value.

My 2015 sport 4x4 (with 3.21's... a 4 inch lift and 35 inch Trail Grapplers) gets 9 mpg.
14+MPG when my wife drives it.

YMMV.

It should have cylinder deactivation too which kicks in at highway speeds. So the more you drive on long highway journeys, or at least on city freeways, then it'll help your economy a lot.

External warranty - 2014 RAM 1500 sport

Guys,

Am planning to get the 2014 RAM sport and the dealer mentioned about external warranty. The truck comes with a bit of power train warranty. Do we really need to buy the external warranty provided by the dealer? Do you guys have any suggestion.

Thanks,
L

How many miles on it?

Does it have the full 8.4 radio?

One of the issues I get an extended warranty for is the electronics. The more you have...the more that could go wrong.

What are they offering as far as cost vs. mileage? Lifetime? Extra 2-3 years? 100K miles?

Lots of things to consider.

I would only get a Chrysler warranty., Not aftermarket.

8.4 radio is the size (largest size) of the dash mounted radio/control unit. Is it the large screen or smaller screen on your dash?

I'd also NEVER do a warranty from ANY aftermarket company...too many horror stories. Go factory warranty ONLY.

I checked the vehicle and love it except the dash says 16.4/100km. I freaked out . Will this change based on my driving or thats pretty standard.

Axle ratio is 3.21

Help appreciated.

I'm not sure what you mean by 16.4/100km. Is that the mileage the truck was getting? Are you in Canada? You can reset that if thats the case...thats just the current mileage. Your driving habits will change that up or down depending on your driving habits.

The 8.4 is the size of the center screen in the dash...above the climate controls. How big is your screen size in the center of the dash? There is the 5 inch screen and the larger 8.4 screen with more controls.

The only reason I was asking about the radio screen size is that its more expensive to replace if its the larger one...if something went wrong an extended warranty may be useful.
