Yes it is big and cd player is inside the box on the armrest. I did not see a small radio so i dont know But I see that 16.4/100 km on topleft is not changing as it averages. But the trip l/km changes when i did the test drive. I just want good gas mileage for a 3.21 axle ratio.

Yes i live in canada and have to put 16.4L to drive 100kms

2014 RAM1500 sport Gas mileage

Guys,

I am planning to buy a 2014 RAM sport edition, v8 engine, 8 speed, 3.21 axle ratio. Today I did the test drive and the dash shows 16.4 L/100Km which is a lot of gas for AR 3.21.

-Do you guys get the same gas mileage?
-There is an average L/100KM and current L/KM.

The dealer mentioned that the previous owner might have towed (or) drove differently and that maybe the reason for that. He mentioned if I drive with less thrust on the pedal and driving careful , I can bring my average l/100km from 16.4 to 12 l/100km. Is this true for a v8 hemi engine?

your advice will help me in deciding to buy or not.

Thanks,
OS

12L/100KM is not unheard of, but I wouldn't expect it all the time, especially if you live in a windy area. I managed to squeak out 11.9 my last highway trip (19.8 MPG), and that was with my 3.92 gears. The catch... I was limited by Minnesota's lower speed limits, with long periods of highway construction which slowed me down even more. That helped a lot with the gas.

Here in South Dakota, with the speed limit at 80 MPH (just under 130 KPH) on the interstate, if the wind isn't terrible, I usually average closer to 14L/100KM. If I fight a wind at all, which happens at least a third of the time, I'm closer to 15-16L/100KM. Again, that is with my 3.92 gears, which will never get quite as good mileage/km compared to 3.21.

If that truck has been test driven frequently, it will show quite high fuel usage. When you test drive, people will take it on short drives, accelerate quickly, get a feel for how sporty/powerful it is. That equates to lower gas mileage (higher L/100KM).

Thanks Jason. So are you saying when I buy the truck and start driving on a constant speed, the average km/l will go down and gas mileage will improve with an Axle ratio of 3.21. Is that true?

Thanks Brian...but am wondering then why the tested vehicle shows 16.4 l/km and Jason mentioned it could be because different people drove the same vehicle. Is that true and how does RAM dashboard calculates the average l/km.

I often floor it so my MPG will be different than one that does not.

2 identical cars don't get the same MPG when there are two different drivers.

if you don't get the above, reset MPG and drive it yourself, then you will see what the cars MPG is with you behind the wheel

I wouldnt go by what it says when you test drive it. When I bought my 14 w/ 3.21 used last year it said the average was 13ish mpg. I averaged 18-19 combined city/hwy before I put my 35s on. Now I average around 17.

The other thing to consider is the previous driver could also have been stuck in stop and go traffic. Or used the remote start on cold morning to warm the car and melt the snow. I live in NY I purchased a used 2016 RAM Limited with a 5.7L and 3:21. My dash shows a decrease in MPG since I purchased the truck, I have let it idle to melt snow, I get stuck in NYC traffic a lot, and there are tons of lights here. However my trip odometer shows I get 16-19 MPG during my drives outside of NYC.

I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage. Thats me though...you're buying a truck :)

I'm sure you'll be just fine on the mileage.

If you have the larger 8.4 radio with CD player then I would see if you can get some type of factory warranty....but don't spend too much for it. Don't go aftermarket if they offer...and make sure that any warranty they offer is cheaper than possible repairs down the line.

Good luck with your choice!

Thanks guys

Claudill,

Here you go. If you see the dash, it says 16.4 l/100km and thats what i am concerned.

14 mpg (or 16l/100km) is about right for combined city & highway driving if you like the power every now and then.

It will change based on how you drive, but I don't know if that number is average over the life of the vehicle, or average for the last tank since mine is in a different spot.

I can & do get 20+ mpg in my truck, and have gotten as high as 22 on the highway. In the city, it's much lower.

If that is the ave for the life of the truck, maybe someone drove it in the city all the time like I do.

I average about 18 mpg in 50/50 city/hwy. I think that would be closer to 13l/100km

RE: Thanks

13 L/KM is awesome...i would not even think about it and just buy it. That's the reason i wanted to confirm that 16.4 L/Km maybe because of other driver and will it change in future (or) once l/KM is set in the engine, the gas mileage will never change. You know how some vehicles whatever we do will not give good gas mileage.... Any thoughts on this?

Don't worry about it....it will change with your driving habits.

I have the 6 spd trans, you'll have the 8, which gets better mpg.....

The vehicle learns your driving habits, so disc the battery for 30 min or so, then start all over.....and read the owners manual.

Do yourself a favour and read the manual. It does a decent job of explaining everything.

Like we say, Minnesota has two seasons - Winter and road construction.

Now if people here could just learn how to do the Zipper in construction zones. No joke people here will start to form a single line a mile before the other lane is even closed ahead.
