Back last summer I bought a new ram 1500, noticed 3000 miles in I had a transmission oil leak on my shop floor, took it to the dealer for it to be looked at, anyway long story short 3/4 of the oil leaked out of the transmission also resulting in some choppy shifting. Took it in, they said the fitting on the trans cooler was leaking from the factory and I likely ran a few thousand miles with very little oil. I asked if their was possible damage and the service manager said don't worry about we fixed the leak and put new oil in there will be no damage possible.

Fast forward to today, I did my first oil change myself given I am fed up with local dealers answer to my possible damage question. took a look at where the transmission case meets the engine and noticed some trans oil there sitting on the surface see attached pic, is this normal on a new truck with 10k miles? No dip stick of course to check oil level, another pet peeve on mine on RAM. I am wondering if the main seal is damaged, might explain the weird noises too before bringing it to the dealer.

There should never be transmission fluid on the case...even more so at 10k miles. I'd take lots of pics, and continue to take it in. Keep taking it in until it's fixed.

If its not the front seal in the trans I would say rear main seal in the motor. Take it the dealership regardless because it shouldn't leak anything.

What's your vin, we can take look based on that, more over, if you have the + and - buttons on your dash, just press the negative, then press the + until you don't see numbers any more, whatever the last number you saw was, is the number of gears you have.

Although, the vin might be the best bet in your situation .

No, it's been a while since those have been used in any truck / car from FCA.
In fact.. I think the last one was in the 1970's. the 2500/3500 had a variation of it a while ago, I think it was in the V10, none the less, it's been a while... Jesus man, where have you been .

I looked up the vin on another site. It said 3 speed transmission. Lol. I just want to know tow capacity and what the optimum weight would be.

Well, if you give me the vin, i'll happily tell you. I'm assuming you'll have the 8 speed if you just got it last year, but not knowing what the year of the truck is, the gearing, cab size, bed size, it's hard to tell you much of anything. No one can do anything with your vin, it's just an identifier of the truck, it's completely safe to share it in the open.

If you have the dial shifter on the dash you have the 8 speed. If it is a column shifter or console shifter it is the 6 speed.

haha, ^^ there you go. that's probably the easiest way to tell, my way was considerably more overly complicated :puke:

I'm at work atm. I'll shoot it out later. No rush. Going to rv show in February. Don't want to look like I don't know what I'm talking about. Hope it doesn't show too much.

If you do some searches in the towing and hauling section there are a ton of threads with the info you are interested in.

Sorry about your issues... But keep us posted, I've noticed a little bit of oil on the garage floor where I park my Ram.. I have not crawled under to check the tranny, I'm afraid with all my other problems, I've got a bad tranny too.
