I just drove about 400 miles over the last two days in the snow/ice between Bend Oregon & Vancouver, Wa.

I would bounce between 4Wd Lock & 4 wd auto. Just kept it under 55 when switching. Worked flawlessly.

I only have Michelin LTX Defenders (Multi Season Tire but look more like a highway tread)...but actually had great traction. Very happy with the truck and tire performance in very challenging road conditions.

I could shift my 88 W100 at any speed when I let off the throttle. My 95 diesel went in at any speed and took several trips over 100 in 4wd.

I've thrown mine in 4A at 60MPH, I don't like this transfer case though, wish I had just a basic part time.

IIRC on my 95 Z-71, with a Manual 5 speed and Manual Transfer case but auto locking hubs on the front, it would go into 4 high anywhere below 40mph. to go to 4 low, you need to be stopped.

Gawd I miss that ruck. it was a Beast. 5.7, manual, dualed out, brush guard, nerf bars, extended cab. that thing loved to play off road.

No kidding , your going down the road at 80mph and it starts to snow. You want to know if it's safe to hit auto 4wd. Slow down and put it in 4 auto. No offense to you but that looks like a question a 20 year old would ask, not someone your age.
I wouldnt ask that hahahahaha, im "old school" i dont go over 55 while 4x4 is engaged. Then again i also have the 44-45

My guess is, with the old basic t-case, 4wd is 4wd..pure mechanical hookup.

But with these new fangled ones, there are clutches between the power & the front axle such that if those clutches fail, you won't have 4wd at all.

What happens when a chain fails on the mechanical ones? Or, when a gear chips a tooth? Don't those fail too?

you lose 4wd as well...been there done that.

but those failures are a lot less common, and usually occur under hard use/abuse or with high miles.......

Liked it at first, but know I hate it. It's always engaged, hurts my MPG and I never use it, well, I used it to launch off a light this evening, but other than that don't wan't it. I want 4WD or 2WD not constant, I would've bought a Subaru if I wanted AWD.

I don't troll, however I can make an exception.

Okay so, the bw44-44 has 4 different modes.

2WD, 4 Auto ( AWD type system ), 4 lock ( which is just 4 hi ),and 4 low, which is 4WD with a lower gear ratio.

Unless you actually select 4 auto, the "AWD" type system isn't activated. Why would you think it's always on? The buttons on the dashboard specifically state, 4WD, or 2WD... why not just put it in 2WD if you don't always want it on ?

I'm aware of this, I've already gone through this ordeal with a Mopar tech at my local dealer. He said when 2WD is selected, the clutches still engage intermittently. My TC is NV246D BTW not 44-44, however, since we're on the topic I managed to find clutch delete kit so now I can quit crying.

Then he's an idiot. The clutches should never , ever engage on a 4x4, that's literally the only difference between a 4x4 and awd.

No the clutches do not engage intermittently when in 2wd. One more reason why I don't have other people work on my crap. 'Service techs' are just parts changers. Very few of them actually know what's going on. There's also a disconnect in the front axles that engages electronically. Used to be vacuum operated, and they failed often.
