I would like to know if anyone else here is having a problem with the transmission slipping on the 1-2 shift (the engine will run up to over 4K, then slam into 2nd) when the truck sets for over 8 hours the first time is shifts, then it is good after that. One dealer said this is normal, and another one said nothing is wrong with it. Hope I do not have this issue also on the new truck when it gets here. Thanks

I have the same problem. From what I read, it is very, very, common. It's so common, people will tell you it's normal. My opinion is that just because it's common, doesn't mean it's normal.

I believe it is a engineering/design flaw. But because it appears to do no harm in the long run (I don't know that as factual) and isn't a safety factor, Mopar is letting that this sleeping dog alone.

At best, it's annoying as hell! I went ahead and purchased the lifetime warranty so if it ever does become a major issue or deteriorates to where a repair is needed, I'm covered. I just haven't heard of anyone stating that it gets worse.

Malatu, Thanks for the reply. It would be nice it we had the option to get a 6-speed trans option when ordering a new truck.

The 8 speed is a way better tranny then the old 6 speed,it'll handle way more power and so far has less warrenty issues then the old 5/6 speed.Plus you can floor it in 8th with-out worrying about cooking it

Mine does not do this, it shifts great everytime.

The 6sp is not a better transmission period, would not have bought another Ram if all I could get was a 6sp again.

This is good to know, Thanks. I grew up on good ole 727 Torqueflights in my B and E body 440 cars. And if I had this spin up issue like this, it could be adjusted out, or change the number of cutch pack springs, or make a change in the valve body. :favorites13:

My truck did this for the first 5000 miles. It slowly went away until I pulled the battery to reset the computer for working on it. Ultimately it was mostly gone around 3000 miles and I've put another 1000 miles on its once I reset it and it seems to be going away quicker this time.

Yea the good days of easy to work on trannies, lol. If you know a good HP tuner, the 8 speed is tune-able to a point. My 8 speed shifts as fast as any old style mechanical tranny now,and it'll bark the tires hard on a part throttle 1-2 shift.Jay is doing remote 8 speed tranny tunes if you don't have a good local HP tuner, they aren't cheap though,i think he's charging almost 300 bucks over and above his normal engine tune. Before everybody yells it should be included, there's a small factor of it takes 4 credits from HP to tune each tranny, and each credit costs 50 bucks, which kinda sucks, lol

I have had the 8spd in a 14 Sport with 3.21s and now in a 17 Laramie with 3.92s and neither shift like you described. Both have been real smooth.

Don't have this issue. I can't even feel my transmission shift.

The only time this happens to me, and only sometimes, is when I leave for work. I usually back into my driveway which is sloped downward. When I leave, I put it in gear and pull the E-Brake and coast to the end of my street. During this time it will hang in the 3500-4000RPM range unless I tap the gas then it will shift into 2nd. If I just coast to the stop sign and stop it doesn't do it after that. Usually only happens a couple times a month.

No other issues with shifting and I drive at least 150 miles a day to and from work.

I have never experienced this issue. My truck is a 2016 with 11k miles on it. 5.7 Hemi with 3.21 gearing. Only time I even feel the thing shift is if I am really getting on the throttle... love the smoothness of the 8-speed in this thing.

I noticed this too when I bought my 2017 Sport back in March. I now have a few thousand miles on the truck and don't really notice it at all anymore.

Mine has done something similar the whole time I've owned the truck. First shift of my morning commute when pulling out of my driveway, it holds the gear a little longer and the shift is a little more abrupt. It's never been too rough or intrusive, so I don't worry about it.

It's definitely being held in first and not slipping. I don't know if it has gone away or pausing for a second in neutral when shifting from Reverse to Drive helps(the truck gets backed out of the garage mostly on cold starts).

Thanks guys for the replies. But mine does have a very noticeable slip during the first 1-2 shift after it sets for 8 hours or longer. I will back out of my driveway, and drive easy down the road in 1st gear, then the engine will rev up above 4,000 rpm then shift into 2nd. It is just like a clutch pack looses the pressure letting the frictions slip before 2nd clutch pack or band engages.
Is started doing it a couple on months ago, and the dealer says it is ok.

Hi Ram Night,

We do have a TSB that was released at the end of March--has your dealership checked to see if this applied to your vehicle?

"NUMBER: 21-013-17
GROUP: Transmission and Transfer Case
DATE: March 31, 2017

SUBJECT:
Flash: Transmission Diagnostic And Shift Enhancements
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves reprogramming the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with the latest available software.
MODELS:
2017 (DS) RAM 1500 Pickup

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may experience a less than desirable shift quality or the vehicle stuck in a fixed gear during a limp in mode.
The following enhancement is included in the software update:
· Improved transmission shift quality and allowing the transmission to shift multiple gears during a limp mode condition."
